Excellent book on classical dynamics : A Dynamicist from MA

I refer to the 1970 edition.
This is a pleasure reading for the analytically oriented reader.
It is about classical dynamics, some basic non-linear dynamics and no modern coordinates-free approach. It is from 1970 so naturally it is not about Multi-Body dynamics. The attitude rotation is restricted to Euler angles and the book doesn't mention Quaternion and other attitude representations. However, it is one of the best books on the subject of particles and rigid body dynamics. Moreover, there are excellent chapters on celestial mechanics and on spacecraft dynamics. The chapter on celestial mechanics is self contained, comprehensive and it is written as an integral part of analytical dynamics. It includes Lagrange's planetary equations, the restricted three body problem and the gravitational potential both in spherical harmonics and in inertia integrals. One can get a good theoretical background on this subject by reading only this book. There is a chapter on classical perturbation theory with demonstrations of the main methods and a chapter on Hamiltonian transformation theory. There is even a nice derivation of Floquet theory for system with periodic coefficient and a derivation of the Lagrangian in quasi-coordinates. In short, this book is a treasure, written meticulously and humbly. One reviewer wrote that the book chapters were taken from other books, as Goldstein. It is half true; almost every classical dynamics book written during last 80 years used previous works (the same for Goldstein). But some material, like gravitational inertia integrals and satellite stability using Hamiltonian is original contribution. Meirovitch is definitely not Poincaré and even not Whittaker, but he did an excellent job in editing, presenting and explaining the material.

An advanced book

The book is advanced and gives you good insight into the dynamic problems. I would also recommend "Principles and Techniques of Vibrations" by the same author.

Thorough, Complete

Great book written in a concise style. The general methods on how to go about analyzing a problem have been given in rigorous detail. The use of tensor and vector notations make the derivations very general, which is nice. This book is a step up in difficulty level from Taylor's book (which is pretty wordy and covers less breadth despite its size - good beginner's book though) and should be use to gain a very thorough physical and mathematical understanding of the subject. Cons: Like most textbooks, its solved problems are pretty easy, so you may struggle a bit with the unsolved exercises.
