Excellent book on classical dynamics : A Dynamicist from MA

I refer to the 1970 edition.
This is a pleasure reading for the analytically oriented reader.
It is about classical dynamics, some basic non-linear dynamics and no modern coordinates-free approach. It is from 1970 so naturally it is not about Multi-Body dynamics. The attitude rotation is restricted to Euler angles and the book doesn't mention Quaternion and other attitude representations. However, it is one of the best books on the subject of particles and rigid body dynamics. Moreover, there are excellent chapters on celestial mechanics and on spacecraft dynamics. The chapter on celestial mechanics is self contained, comprehensive and it is written as an integral part of analytical dynamics. It includes Lagrange's planetary equations, the restricted three body problem and the gravitational potential both in spherical harmonics and in inertia integrals. One can get a good theoretical background on this subject by reading only this book. There is a chapter on classical perturbation theory with demonstrations of the main methods and a chapter on Hamiltonian transformation theory. There is even a nice derivation of Floquet theory for system with periodic coefficient and a derivation of the Lagrangian in quasi-coordinates. Again, the book is not complete as the title sugests: Methods of ...
In short, this book is a treasure, written meticulously and humbly. One reviewer wrote that the book chapters were taken from other books, as Goldstein. It is half true; almost every classical dynamics book written during last 80 years used previous works (the same for Goldstein). But some material, like gravitational inertia integrals and satellite stability using Hamiltonian is original contribution. Meirovitch is definitely not Poincaré and even not Whittaker, but he did an excellent job in editing, presenting and explaining the material.

The book is advanced and gives you good insight into the dynamic problems. I would also recommend "Principles and Techniques of Vibrations" by the same author.

Thorough, Complete

Great book written in a concise style. The general methods on how to go about analyzing a problem have been given in rigorous detail. The use of tensor and vector notations make the derivations very general, which is nice. This book is a step up in difficulty level from Taylor's book (which is pretty wordy and covers less breadth despite its size - good beginner's book though) and should be use to gain a very thorough physical and mathematical understanding of the subject. Cons: Like most textbooks, its solved problems are pretty easy, so you may struggle a bit with the unsolved exercises.

Textbook for Math Olympiad or HS Math Contests

Very rarely do you find a single textbook that covers most of the materials for math olympiad or contests aspired students. Also, it's hard to find one high school math text that provides a comprehensive (meaning from basic to advanced) topics to students. 10 years ago I struggled to find one in vain, ended up with reading different treatise like books by Loney, Palmer, Knight-Hall etc to get a solid background in secondary/precalculus math. Now this book does it all. The only drawbacks are that: 1. many typos; 2. typesetting is pretty ugly; 3. no solutions to exercises--which can render the reader infinite amount of time to work out all the problems.

Hopeless book

Thank God it is out of print. Reading this book, it felt as if the authors wanted to show their superiority in math and that they are least interested in helping the students. When I was a kid, there was no training available for math Olympiad in India. I used to bike miles together to a math professor's home which was at a remote place outside my town. I carried this book with me to try and understand the ways of solving tough problems. It was hopelessly written. Just basic theorems were given with no information about any heuristics. The text part consisted of theorems and some worked out problems and the exercises were all mightly hard (all taken from IMOs for the most part). How was I supposed to understand the ways of solving such problems?

Please look at the book written by Arthur Engel titled "Problem Solving Strategies". Right now, the book is even freely available on some website and you can google it to find the link. This book exemplifies the way to write a training book for math Olympiad. Math Olympiad problems are tough ONLY if you are not familiar with the heuristics. If you know the heuristics well, it is very much possible for any person with average intelligence to solve those problems.

I know the culture at IISC math department very well as I have friends and relatives belonging to that circle. These authors are/were from that school. Right now, younger math professors are coming in and I hope they will do a better job. But the older ones have only one thing on their mind. That one thing is to show superiority to others about their knowledge. Please avoid this book completely as it is useless. It will only make you feel more inferior and won't help in any way to crack Olympiad. I suggest Arthur Engel's book as a start. If you have time, you can look at other books also like "The Art and Craft of Problem Solving" by the fantastic author Prof. Paul Zeitz and "Mathematical Olympiad Challenges" by another great Prof. Titu Andreescu. Undeveloped

The story line is cute, but it is not developed. On page one pretty much everything is clear and the rest was one dimensional: a series of dialogues, a few thoughts and this happened, that happened. I'm sorry I didn't like it because, like I said, the story line is cute.

Pretty Clichéd Vanilla

The book was free when I got so I can't be terribly upset and I did like the premise of the story and the beginning was fairly strong, but unfortunately it lost me about halfway through. I did finish the book so it wasn't terrible but it pretty much had every romance cliché imaginable. There was very little character development and everything was pretty much spelled out for the reader, I felt the author had a great opportunity to go somewhere with the whole feng shui deal but just dropped it in preference to the "romance". This story was also a prime example of the, oh dear everything is going too well lets throw in some conflict for the sake of conflict by making the heroine run away without ever actually discussing things with the hero, style. Thankfully this wasn't drawn out but it still made me want to slap the wishy-washy heroine. I could go on but I really don't want to rant or spoil the story for anyone. If you are running out of freebie options read this story, but don't have too high of expectations.

The story focuses around the love story exclusively. Without any side stories or subplots, it makes the characters a bit 2 dimensional. I believe this author does have a point of view and will grow in time.
