FINALLY, BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ GETS THE SUPERIOR TRANSLATION IT DESERVES

Most potential readers are aware of Berlin Alexanderplatz from the Rainer Werner Fassbinder miniseries which some critics regard as one of the greatest films of the 20th century. In interviews, Fassbinder had said Berlin Alexanderplatz was profoundly instrumental directing his creative path as an artist. When I learned that, as well as being in complete agreement that his film is magnificent and Gunter Lamprecht performance (as Franz Biberkopf) one of the greatest in film history, I knew I had to read it. But the original translation By Eugene Jolas, done in the early 1930's, is painfully outdated and awkward. I kept trying to get involved but just couldn't manage it.
Berlin Alexanderplatz ached for a new translation.
This edition, by Anne Thompson, is completely right. I don't know who she is or where she comes from (the book gives no biographical information) but I really think I am reading what Alfred Doblin wanted for English speaking readers. I can't add anything to my own review that was not already eloquently covered in Giordano Bruno's review of the old Jolas translation which you can read here.

Better the second time?

A former reading of this work has been made about a year ago with the Eugene Jolas translation from an aged 2 Volume set put out by Vintage in the 1930 s. The work is riveting. Doblin has created a half-real, half stream of consciousness type odyssey of sorts with his character traversing a modern Greek Tragedy. The progress is one of seeming advancement and betrayal, both from a community of subterfuge and danger and from the inner demons that the (anti?)hero is trying to overcome.
The work can seem to move a bit slowly at times, but there is some need for pauses and the continuing downwards progression might be too predictable if it were seen to be coming at some even rate.
The work has been really of exceedingly limited availability.
This translation is quite a bit similar to that of Jolas, perhaps with a bit more of a modern tone to the English wording.
At a single volume, it is a bit easier to read by heft than the Vintage edition of some 80 years back.

Brilliant, Distrubing Reading

Brilliant read from the end of Weimar Republic and the emergence of the Nazis.

Disturbing, brilliantly written, great pacing, and an argument as cogent today, not about Nazis of course, as it was in the late 1920s.

All the guy wants is a chance...no one seems to want to give it him.

Highly recommended for fans of European 20th Century literature and political history.

I am an Ivy league law student and I used the book in a class on entrepreneurship and advising start-ups. In short, the book was a precious companion to support the course and I also highly recommend it to inexperienced entrepreneurs.

It was useful to me because, never seriously faced with the challenges of entrepreneurship, I had an incomplete view of the process. The authors explain the entire operation of creating a start-up, giving many practical examples (using personal experience, famous examples or general patterns) in a succinct, well-structured and enjoyable way. It can thus be read either face-to-face or used to look up specific answers during the entrepreneurial journey.

Aside helping entrepreneurs and founders with better understanding their undertaking, the book also highlights common mistakes and provides very practical and hands-on advice such as “Where should I incorporate my company? Under what form? Can I start my company while still continuing my current job? And what are intellectual rights? When do I need to start thinking about these questions and when should I get help?”

In conclusion, it’s a useful guidebook, for students and entrepreneurs alike, and a great introduction into the topic.

This book is an absolute must read for anyone considering Entrepreneurship or one that has already taken the plunge and is building a business. Many of the organizational structures outlined in this book - centered on the lean startup methodology - I use in my daily work as a startup Founder & CEO. The book does a fantastic job covering the business model canvas, which we still use to a considerable degree, and other concepts such as the decline of VC as a source of funds, MVP and how to iterate, and pivoting with the short business plan.

Additionally, the book includes a vast array of cases and exercises that you really can't find elsewhere, particularly with this degree of detail. The cases crystallize how to apply these critical concepts in order to learn from customer development and interaction with MVPs. It is especially useful for those with little to no experience in entrepreneurship as it is a fundamentally different way of thinking and doing. As I've been living and breathing this stuff for the last few years I can confidently say that lean startup and its methods are critical when it comes to real-life execution. I highly recommend reading this book and using it for years to come.

As Managing Director of a top Executive MBA program, it is amazing to see when the real world meets academia head on. Professor Kaplan does an amazing job of balancing his experiences a successful entrepreneur and world class academic. At the intersection lies an easily digestible text that is a must have for both new and experienced entrepreneurs trying to launch new ventures in today's complex and ever changing business environment. Going through this text gave me the feeling of my own MBA days, and certainly got my own entrepreneurial juices flowing. It is tough to make it through the book without being excited about one or two of your own ideas! Overall, a great read and highly recommended.

Fever by Charlotte Lamb is one of Lamb's better books. The story begins when the heroine, Sara Nichols ,is attending a party with her step brother. The hero, Nick Rawdon, asks someone to introduce the two. As they are being introduced, the heroine is attempting to keep an eye on her step brother who has a tendency to become drunk and tell their clients what he really thinks of them at these types of shindigs. Sara and her stepbrother are both artists while Nick, is a businessman. Nick is the sort of person who Sara and her stepbrother detest because of his wealth. Anyway, as they were being introduced Sara kinda didn't give Nick much of her attention. Of course this made him want to meet her all the more. Somehow Nick thinks that Sara's step brother is her lover. Since she doesn't want to be bothered with any man, Sara allows Nick to believe the tall tale.
Moving on, Nick decides that he wants her for himself and really goes about trying to make her his. Sara does everything she can think of to put distance between the two. When a job comes up in the country side, she takes it. After a long separation between the two, Nick finds Sara at a party with one of his employees. Now Nick is really feigning for Sara because he snatches her out of the party and into his car. At this point he thinks she and her stepbrother aka fake lover are some type of swingers. Of course they manage to work it out at the end. It took the Nick and Sara about two years to finally get together because Sara was determined to avoid Nick at all costs. Even in the end she was sort of pulled along by some other people to give into Nick. I really enjoyed this book and it almost pulled a crocodile tear or two from my eyes. I love when the hero has to wallow in self pity & jealously because of his love

Hypocritical and arrogant reading!

I like some of Charlotte Lamb's books, but unfortuntaly, like many of her books of the 70s and 80s, this one also features a hero that is cruel and sadistic to a women is really not so sympathetic herself. Sara is an artist who has an infatuation with her guardian of many years. Nick is a banker who sees her and wants her. But he gets the mistaken impression she's a swinger and although he desires her, has contempt for her. I was forced to sit through endless tirades of Nick blasting Sara's supposed personality which wasn't even true, and I was always thinking that he's such a hypocrite because it didn't stop him from taking what he could from women like the woman he thought Sara was! Even at the end, when he finally found out Sara's true nature and she called him on his hypocritical behavior, he didn't seem enough repentant to me. Here he's admitting there were other women after he met her, and he had been grousing about thinking she had other men. It was ridiculous. I can't really recommend this book, unless it sounds appealing to you.

Great book

I disagree entirely with the previous review. The basic plot is correct. Nick thinks that Sarah is has a love relationship with her step brother. He doesn't respect her but is desperately attracted to her. I found him an attractive and appealing hero. He was not one-dimensional, but was in conflict about his feelings for her.
The book is well-written. There is a side plot with the step brother which is also very emotional.

The sub­ sequent chapters are devoted to the study of the static and dynamic properties of the SCR, the RCT, the GTO, and the triac; they in­ clude discussions of forward voltage drops, maximum voltage­ blocking capabilities, turn-on and turn-off transients, current and voltage rise rates, and desirable and undesirable triggering effects.

Lovely, great quality

These notebooks are great! They are beautiful and so well made. With 3 different cover designs, the cover material is somewhat textured and the "Notebook" font on the front is lightly embossed printed in gold ink. The inside cover is also printed in gold ink with a lovely pattern. O the inside it has lined pages with gold print. These are almost too beautiful to write in! They would make great gifts!

These are Knock Offs

These notebooks had the same "design" but felt much flimsier than the prior set of 3 Rifle notebooks I'd bought before. Put side to side with a Rifle paper co notebook I bought before, these are clearly knock offs. The cover is flimsier, the pages are thinner, the labeling on the back doesn't say "rifle paper co" and the back inside cover/label says "Rifle Inc" instead of "Rifle Paper Co." on the real notebook. If you're fine with a less durable notebook, these are fine, but it's false advertising to say it's made by Rifle Paper company, because these clearly are not. If you are actually looking for the high quality Rifle paper co notebooks, buy the real ones.

This product is GORGEOUS! I am hiding it from my daughters because I know they will want the two books I'm not yet using. I bought this so I can start a gardening journal and it is perfect. I love the gold lines on the pages and the cover. The only fault, for my purpose, is that I doubt this will wipe off easily if I get any dirt on it. So I'm being sure to not take notes while actually gardening or near my gardens, but instead write my notes at the kitchen table when I'm done for the day. I also prefer pages that are perforated so that I can rip sheets out in case of a mistake or for any purpose. The way this journal is bound, I suspect the pages will fall apart/out if I did that. But I am still in LOVE!

Lyrics provided only for 4 maybe 5 songs out of a total 174 songs!

Granted, the majority of songs were sourced from European countries.

What's disappointing is that CHUCK SHER's previous books e.g. Real Books 1, 2, & 3 had song lyrics provided, and one is justified in expecting the same for this book.

Joyce Farrell's Visual C# 2015

Visual C# 2015 is Joyce Farrell's update of her earlier Visual C# editions. She writes clearly, and the material is presented in topic by topic order, so that the book could conceivably be used later as a reference, although not for advanced topics. The intended audience is a student one -- who else would pay the book's outrageous price but students compelled to buy it on the behest of their instructor?

The book has NO coverage of database access. This was a show-stopper for me and will likely be so for the many others whose intended target is building database-enabled applications. So too the book's over-the-top price.

In a few weeks there should be several competing Visual C# 2015 books available at 25% of the price of the Farrell book. For those who can wait, I suggest they do so, unless they have money to burn.
