A big story told well in a slim volume.
By J. A. Odell
Brief but enjoyable and thought-provoking history of southern Vermont's doomed West River Railroad of the late 1800s and early 1900s. A fantastic portrait of rural New England during the time period, the national obsession with rail travel, and how even fiscal disasters can be social successes. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates Yankee local histories.

From Publishers Weekly
In his newest collection of poems, Appleman ( Open Doorways ) deals directly and uncompromisingly with the inexplicability of God's treatment of man , recasting stories from the Old and New Testaments to show God in a more human light. In "Sarah," God and Abraham are literally "nose to nose," arguing over the fate of Sodom. Abraham asks, "How about / all the good folks over there? . . . are you going to blast them right along / with the perverts?" In the humorous but tragic "Noah," one of the ark-builder's sons angrily questions God's purpose in murdering most of the creatures on earth with His "killer flood": "Listen / Dad, I thought you said He / was omniscient--well, then, / wouldn't He have foreseen all this?" Using language that is smooth and fluid, Appleman skillfully explores the comic potential of these myths, but never to the point of caricature. Other poems stress the simple pleasures of love and the quiet beauty of life amid the pain caused by God's unrelenting cruelty. Unfortunately, for all of his probing religious revisionism, the poet ultimately offers only this feeble conclusion: "God /is . . . a trick with mirrors, our / dark reflection in a glass."

This is great stuff and really makes a lot of sense.
By Edward J. Klein (edley2000_99@yahoo.com)
Bible literalists will hate this book, but how can anyone with a modicum of common sense really believe the story of Jonah and the Whale, Noah and the Ark, Adam and Eve, and other Bible stories that make no sense whatever when they are subject to rational analysis. They simply have to be treated as allegories, an inference that Appleman makes plain in his treatment of these accounts in the Jewish Bible. And he does it with great humor and perceptiveness. I hope he comes up with another book of poems based on the Bible and other religous themes, and shows how utterly ridiculous some of them are. Christians who are allowed to think for themselves, I am sure, will find Appleman's perceptions eminently reasonable and acceptable.

It's Still In An Easy-Reach-for-it Position
By KatesCarrys
in my library.... years after my original purchase.
Match a bright, kind, noticing brain with the true skill of a first-rate multi-genre writer - and there you have Philip Appleman. This delightful book of commentary, satire & biting sarcasm in verse form still loses none of the joy of someone whose deep love and appreciation of our earth and fear for its' future mingle on the page with his intellectual distrust of the unproven or unprovable, the restrictive & oppressive barriers erected by dogma.
I still treasure this small volume and hope you find it equally worth your time and esteem.

Review
[This] book is a very useful source on the Iran–Iraq war, adding a wealth of useful material that was not available before. One of its central themes – that of ‘missed opportunities’ in US–Iranian relations – is also well-taken and critical to an understanding of the topic. (European Political Science)

By applying an innovative methodology ("critical oral history"), by engaging some of the most authoritative voices on the subject matter in a well-informed, candid, and insightful dialogue, and through their own trenchant analyses, the authors of this groundbreaking work provide a fresh perspective on the mindsets, misperceptions, and misguided policies by Iran, Iraq, and the United States, that helped start and prolong what became one of the bloodiest regional wars in the latter half of the twentieth century. For policymakers, scholars, and students pondering the causes of the enduring enmities and mistrust between Iran and the United States today, this book is a must read. (Ali Banuazizi, Boston College and past president, Middle East Studies Association)

An elegantly written treasure trove of fascinating, forgotten, and previously unrevealed history. For those seeking to understand the roots of modern enmity between the U.S. and Iran, Becoming Enemies is a truly unique and wonderful resource. (Karim Sadjadpour, Carnegie Endowment)

A fascinating, eye-opening book about the players and politics of the Iran-Iraq war and the war's domestic and foreign policy repercussions whose effects continue to resonate today. (Haleh Esfandiari, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars)

Becoming Enemies provides a unique and unrivalled insight into the framing of U.S. policy toward the Iran-Iraq war and the roots of the contemporary American-Iranian antagonism. The innovative approach of critical oral history yields penetrating insights into how policy-makers and officials understood events at the time and in hindsight. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand recent U.S. policy in the Middle East. (Nigel J. Ashton, London School of Economics and Political Science)

Too often, Americans seem eager to do things rather than to understand things. For those who wish to understand, this book offers invaluable insights about the world's most dysfunctional relationship. By explaining a key episode in the long conflict between Iran and the United States, it presents invaluable insights. Whether Americans are willing to consider them could make the difference between war and peace. (Stephen Kinzer, author of Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds)

The roots of all of America’s current problems with Iraq and Iran lie in our conduct during the Iran-Iraq War. Becoming Enemies provides a profound understanding into that experience. It is a fascinating story, and by presenting it in the words of those who crafted the policy, it gives the reader a rare “fly-on-the-wall” perspective on how American policy gets made, and how the United States got itself into the mess it is in today in the Persian Gulf. (Kenneth M. Pollack, author of The Persian Puzzle: The Conflict Between Iran and America and Arabs at War: Military Effectiveness, 1948-1991)

In this brilliant and disturbing book, America’s foreign policy toward the Islamic Republic of Iran in the 1980s is told, for the first time, from deep inside the U.S. decision making apparatus of the Carter and Reagan administrations. It is a sobering tale of Washington’s misperceptions, ignorance and arrogance drawing on newly declassified documentation and oral testimony from key participants, who struggle to come to grips with how and why the U.S. rallied behind one of the twentieth century’s most brutal despots, Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, in his war with Ayatollah Khomeini’s Iran, thereby sowing the seeds of bitter U.S.-Iranian enmity that exists to this day. (Patrick Tyler, former Middle East correspondent for The New York Times and The Washington Post)

During the calamitous decade following the fall of the Pahlavi regime the Carter and Reagan administrations struggled to reorient the U.S. policy to a Middle East where a central geopolitical pillar had been upended. This was a decade of enormous violence and confusion, and a period when mutual enmity and suspicion were deeply gouged into the collective minds of the Iranian and U.S. political elite. This novel and commendably lucid volume draws on a trove of declassified documents, as well as top scholars and policy experts to offer fresh accounts of defining episodes of the decade. The often enlightening give-and-take of scholars, diplomats and officials, several of whom played leading roles during this fateful period, lends authenticity to the authors' assessments. Given the dangers that continue to haunt U.S.-Iran relations, Becoming Enemies could not be more urgent to read and ponder. (Augustus Richard Norton, Boston University)

An incredibly fascinating book!
By mmm
For those who want to step back and ponder how we and Iran arrived at a state of distrust and antipathy, this is a real MUST READ. It "is the edited and annotated transcript" of a 2008 conference of scholars with former officials from the U.S., U.N., and Iran -- using pertinent declassified documents from 1979-1988. The participants received the written material prior to the conference at which they were asked to discuss the documents, their memories of the events, any surprises, and their more mature judgements. The transcripts reveal more surprises and revelations than the last issue of Vanity Fair!

Not only did President Reagan and Co. sell arms to Iran while the U.S. was supporting Iraq, Israel sold arms and equipment to Iran throughout the war! When the U.S. knew for certain that Iraq was using chemical weapons against the Kurds and the Iranians, we and the U.N did nothing, except that U.S. Intelligence services continued to assist Saddam Hussein in pinpoint gassing! And we blamed Iran for the gas attacks! Can we honestly think Iran had NO reason to try to develop nuclear weapons at the war's conclusion?

I have naively preferred to think of us in the past as the GOOD GUYS. Support of chemical warfare, lies, false accusations -- these are not the acts of good guys.

This book persuades me that the actions toward a permanent nuclear agreement are the moral path of those trying hard to be good guys, trying to restore trust, and loyal to the best interests of the U.S. and of the Middle East's most stable and sane country. My sincere gratitude to President Obama,John Kerry, Ernest Moniz, to the P5, and to the Supreme Leader and his Merry Band for laying out a path to hope. I hope that Bibi Netanyahu and HIS Band of Neoconservatives, and their good friend Tom Cotton, spew their venom this time in vain.

This is a page-turner for sure!

How we cope with grief and come to terms with the death of a loved one shapes our world. In this comprehensive guide to the mourning process, Dr Volkan, a world-recognised authority on grief, shows how each mourning is as individualised as our fingerprints, encoded with our past history of losses. Anecdotal and compassionate, this is a profoundly moving and informative study of how grief and loss shape all our lives.

From Publishers Weekly
"The power of unsolved grief" may come not only from death but from change and the pain of losing even that which has caused unhappiness, contends Univeristy of Virginia Medical Center psychiatrist Volkan. Writing with freelancer Zintl and drawing on his own experience and that of others, such as the "complicated" mourning undergone by those close to AIDS victims, Volkan traces bereaved people's progress from denial to acceptance and the necessary "work of mourning" meant to prepare them for reimmersion in life. Therapeutic measures for the bereaved and the people who seek to help them conclude this original and not overly technical approach to surviving grief.

From Library Journal
Volkan, a psychiatrist at the University of Virginia Medical Center, and journalist Zintl analyze our various responses to loss. Their book's first section explores uncomplicated mourning, beginning with the mourner's immediate response to death, followed by his or her assessment and review of the relationship with the deceased, and ending when the mourner moves on from the loss. The second section uses case studies to illustrate complicated mourning and the risk factors that predispose one to it. These include the mourner's experience with past loss(es), his or her emotional ability to tolerate separation, and the particular nature of the relationship between the mourner and the deceased. The final section discusses the use of brief psychotherapy in resolving complicated mourning. This straightforward book will interest the professional and lay reader alike. For most libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
A psychiatrist reveals what he's learned about how we mourn- -and what happens when we can't. With the assistance of journalist Zintl, Volkan (Psychiatry/University of Virginia Medical Center) details how we deal with what he calls ``uncomplicated'' mourning--the psychological response to the tolerable loss of someone with whom we had little unfinished business. In successful mourning, there is movement from denial to acceptance, followed by an assessment of the relationship with the lost one and a letting-go. Mourning that doesn't progress normally is termed ``complicated'' by Volkan, who looks at the factors that lead to it, such as unfinished business with the deceased, unresolved past losses, external circumstances, and one's particular emotional makeup. Case studies from the author's practice illustrate how people may become stuck in denial, be unable to resolve their loss, and be plunged into depression. Volkan shares his views on how to help the relatively few who require psychotherapy in dealing with grief. He cautions against emotion-muffling drugs and offers his own program of ``regrief'' therapy--a brief but intense form of treatment utilizing objects such as photographs or personal possessions that link the patient to the lost one. But although Volkan directs his words not just to those experiencing grief but also to bereavement counselors and care givers, the information on grief therapy, and specifically on his own regrief therapy, is too scanty to provide much guidance. In a final chapter, the author touches on the link between mourning and creativity. Volkan offers some understanding of a universal human experience, but his therapeutic advice is too brief to be truly useful. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

My friend said this book really helped her deal with a death of a loved one.. so I decided to read it!
By Mista R O'Regan
My friend is a psychologist, she recently read this book and said it was amazing and extremely helpful to her claiming it 'literally explains all of my life'.. (Her father had committed suicide in her youth) [she would have given this book 5* for sure]

Since the book was thin, I thought it would be interesting to read though I'm perhaps not the best candidate for reading a book like this, I've had no major loss and not particularly interested in this area!

However I found this book useful to gain a perspective on how human beings typically mourn, both consciously and unconsciously. A perspective I didn't have before.

Even years after a death, subconsciously people can still be mourning, even though they think they have resolved the grief.

The book gives many real case studies of people with issues that learned to deal with their loss and explains typical pathways of healing that people tend to go through. e.g. denial, then bargaining e.g. with god.. then an acceptance.. etc etc It explains the role dreams have as showing the stage the mourner is currently in. Sometimes it's not just a loss of a person but could be anything, e.g. their youth, or security etc

The book also explains complicated losses, eg a mother may lose a son who was a hated murderer.. so eg the mother may not feel she is allowed to show her grief.. or the grief has mixed emotions, a deep sadness, but perhaps also embarrassment or anger.

Less obvious common phenomenon are also covered, eg 'linking objects' mourners typically have, it could be anything eg an object, or adopting a mannerism.. it's a connection to those passed away.

Overall, I feel I gained an understanding into the complex unconscious way human's can overcome loss.
Should I experience a major loss, or have a friend with a major loss in the future, I think I will have a better insight into how to heal the situation more gracefully.

Despite the sad subject matter, a positive and practical book.
As mentioned, I gave it 4*, but perhaps if Id had more personal life experience with this subject (like my friend), I may well have given this 5* !

P.s. I only leave reviews for a small percentage of books I read, because it takes a lot of time. I only want to do so if it is of some help to someone. If you find this review helpful please let me know as I have many more reviews I can leave if you want me to!

Grief and mourning
By BubbyG
One of the most clear and insightful books on loss and grief I have every read. Volkan explores the sizable challenges and intricacies of grief and loss through a psychoanalytical lens using two primary categories: uncomplicated and complicated mourning. He takes great care to acknowledge that grief and mourning are as personal and unique to each individual as their fingerprints. His concepts are clearly illustrated with moving case examples and his ideas are accessible to both layman and professional.

Best book on grief I've ever read.
By Diane
I wish they would republish this book, as it is currently out of print. I order copies whenever I can for friends/family going through the grief process. It is particularly helpful when dealing with a sudden, unexpected or violent death, one in which you never got to say goodbye.

Slip
By toronto
This edition is beyond praise, the whole thing is invaluable. My growse is about something not ultimately important, just irritating. Elsewhere I have complained that these books are only available in paperback, which makes temporary economic sense, but not for a lifetime's study. It is worth adding here that the "slipcover" to the two volumes -- shown in the picture above -- is just thick paper, not remotely sturdy, and cheap. It is unfathomable to me that Norton would spend all that money on such a brilliant enterprise and not showcase it properly.

This is a huge step in the direction toward an appreciation of The Bible as a literary anthology. The editorial notes and additional primary source materials are wonderful. The Norton Edition of The Bible will no doubt be the essential edition for new scholarship.

Norton Critical Edition of King James Version--a bargain!
By Anne M. O'Donnell
Two-volume set is a bargain at $40.95 and free postage. I have read "Backgrounds" and "Exegesis" of New Testament, which I found dry and hard-going. I will enjoy "Poetic Reimaginings" more--I've taught most of them. I expect to find "Case Studies" and "Translation of 1 Corinthians 13" engaging. I haven't yet approached critical background on Old Testament.

I have read Luther's German Bible twice, Geneva Bible once, and King James Version twice. It's possible to read each one through in a year by reading 3 chapters a day from January through November and leaving Psalms until December. (I'm working on the Douai-Rheims Bible, which is hard to read within a year. It has 14 books or parts of books from the Old Testament, surviving in Greek not Hebrew and thus Deutero-canonical.)

Review
Top pick! There is so much to love about The Song, which is written in two parts and based on “The Song of Songs.” The prose is expressive and song lyrics are integrated to advance the story. Biblically based marital advice reminds the reader that temptations will arise, but love is a commitment. Heart-wrenching and emotional scenes abound in this tale of fame, fortune, loss and redemption. (Romantic Times)

From the Back Cover
JED KING’S LIFE has been shaped and scarred by the songs and mistakes of his famous father. He wants to sing his own song, but the words and melody are elusive. Jed’s dreams of a successful music career seem out of reach . . . until he meets Rose.

Inspired by his love for the vineyard owner’s daughter, Jed pens a new song― a song with such emotional power and longing that it catapults him into stardom. But with this life of fame comes temptation, the same temptation that lured his father so many years ago and now threatens to unravel his marriage.

The pull of “The Song” takes Jed and Rose on a journey that will force them to deal with failure, the pain of loss, and the desire to be who God created them to be. Together they will test the limits of the promise that love is the power that heals.

Lyrical and deeply honest, The Song asks hard questions of love and forgiveness. When even the wisest of men is a fool for love, can true love persevere?

Powerful reminder that we must protect our marriages
By Melissa Finnegan
I saw the trailer for the movie before I even knew there was a book releasing and I wanted to see it. So when I saw the book up for review I grabbed the chance to read it (I haven’t seen the movie yet).

This is a powerful story based on King Solomon and the scriptures he penned. I love how the author wove scripture into the book and even into some of the lyrics to Jed’s songs.

Jed and Rose find each other and have an instant connection. Jed knows there will be more than one date and he is right. Rose is the girl he has been longing for. Someone strong in her faith and not willing to compromise.

Jed rises to stardom and you can see the signs that I have seen in my own marriage (not due to stardom but due to past wounds) and in many other marriages that trouble is ahead. Their tight bond is coming unraveled.

With the introduction of Shelby Bales comes the introduction of the enemy into this already rocky marriage. Shelby has come to devour and destroy. She is selfish and wants what she wants.

This is what our enemy, Satan, does. He looks for our weaknesses and then plays on them. He knows how to play the game much better then we do. He looks for the cracks in our lives and sneaks in before we even realize he has invaded our thoughts and before we know it we are acting in a way that is a part from God.

I have been there and it’s not a fun place to be, of course the enemy makes it look and once he has where he wants us he makes us miserable.

This is what happens to Jed King. But, you’ll have to read the book for yourself to see how that all plays out.

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Hard to Get Motivated to Read
By Faye
Jed King is on a search to find and sing his own song, one different from his forebears and their broken families that came before, something new and his own, but he keeps falling back into old habits. But when he meets Rose, everything changes... for awhile anyways, until the old temptations come back to haunt him once again.

"When even the wisest men are fools in love, can true love persevere?"

This was a difficult book to read, with the foreboding sense that things would only get worse as the story progressed. Jed King grew up in a troubled and broken family, with many of the roots leading back to his relationship with his father, a singer/songwriter. Rose and and Jed's relationship is a bright spot in this rather hard to read account, I love how they met, fell in love, and their shared respect for each other at the beginning of their relationship.

I really liked Rose's dad, he had a gruff exterior, but he really was a great dad who just wanted the best for his daughter.

I felt so bad for Rose who had to live without Jed for long stretches at a time while raising their sweet little son, Ray. But I liked that she had a great friend at church to help her when things were tough.

Overall, a well written story about the struggle and toil that fame can take on personal relationships as well as the temptations. I wouldn't really say that this is a book I would read again anytime soon, because it was just so hard when I knew things would only get worse. I wished that the book had focused more on him making things rights, instead of him going so wrong. A tale of love, forgiveness, and redemption.

Drifting House, by Krys Lee

Set in Korea and the United States from the postwar era to contemporary times, Krys Lee's stunning fiction debut illuminates a people struggling to reconcile the turmoil of their collective past with the rewards and challenges of their present. Amid the famine in North Korea, the financial crisis of South Korea, and the cramped apartments and Koreatown strip malls of the United States, Krys Lee's vivid and luminous tales speak to the political and financial hardships of life in Korea and the uniquely unmoored immigrant experience.

In the tradition of Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker and Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies, Drifting House is an unforgettable work exploring love, identity, war, and the homes we make for ourselves, by a dazzling new writer.

From Booklist
Lee’s debut story collection features diverse characters confronting the terms of their distinct situations and misfortunes, exploring the borders between lost homelands and shifting relationships. In “A Temporary Marriage,” Mrs. Shin leaves Seoul for California to find her young daughter, kidnapped three years earlier by her ex-husband. She arranges a sham marriage with Korean emigrate Mr. Rhee, a relationship that becomes more nuanced as Mrs. Shin’s search intensifies. In the devastating title tale, three young siblings have no choice but to flee famine-ravaged North Korea for China, a journey that leads to harrowing decisions. “The Salaryman” follows a South Korean businessman as his life spirals out of control after he is fired from his job. “At the Edge of the World” portrays nine-year-old Mark Lee and his parents as they navigate their new life in Los Angeles, while Mark’s father struggles to come to terms with his past. Varying in settings from North and South Korea to the U.S., from postwar to present age, Lee’s nine tales offer haunting perspectives of dislocation and reconciliation. --Leah Strauss

Review
“In nine haunting tales, this Korean-born author . . . writes of the psychological fallout from Korea's troubled history and the toll on families living in a fractured world. . . . The metaphor of the drifting house serves as an apt, unifying roof over these harrowing, tragic stories about unmoored characters who find themselves neither here nor there. Lee . . . is well on her way to a promising literary career.” —NPR.org

“When reading the stories of debut author Krys Lee's Drifting House, the simplicity and restraint of the writer come to the fore: declarative sentences, no fulsome descriptions despite the exotic locales of some of her stories. It is in this quiet confidence that the true strangeness and beauty of the work can emerge. . . . It is the cool telling that allows the tectonic plates of history, social forces and circumstances to move beneath these stories, conveying the feeling that something urgent and profound is at stake, beyond the lives of these striving, damaged and unforgettable characters.” —Marie Myung-Ok Lee, San Francisco Chronicle

“This powerful debut collection takes an unflinching look at the reality of life in Korea. . . . Lee plumbs the darkness on both sides of this divided nation. . . . Hers is a unique approach. . . . By showing these authentic, everyday people at dramatic and pivotal moments, Krys Lee strips them to the core of their humanity. Her vision is a solemn one, but an important one too.” —Financial Times

“Krys Lee . . . is already a precise stylist and an unflinching observer of the unfortunate lot of her compatriots, those who stay [in Korea] and those who make it to the States. . . . In the best stories, like the tragic yet luminous ‘A Small Sorrow,’ the story of a flawed marriage and an artistic rivalry, Lee's psychological acuity is empathetic under its unsentimental portraiture.”

—The Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Drifting House has shades of Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth in its rendering of split cultural identities. But even more, it recalls Alice Munro’s Too Much Happiness, holding beauty and brutality in an elegant equipoise. . . . In her textured, knowing and brilliant debut, Lee tells hard truths, tenderly.”

—The Kansas City Star

“If there's one thing Krys Lee knows how to do it's use history and culture as the boards and backdrop of a narrative while allowing her characters to take centre-stage. . . . The two finest stories in the collection, ‘Drifting House’ and ‘The Believer,’ achieve extraordinary feats within a few pages— murder, madness, haunting, loss of faith and more.”

—The Guardian (London)

“Insightful. . . . A keen observation of the layers of Korean society the past few generations, and of the dualities that have shaped the peninsula and its people. . . . The collection is at its best in exploring the duality of past and future, of memory and hope. And it is often at its best. . . . A part tragic and part nostalgic perspective of modern Korea.”

—The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“Drifting House offers a rare look at how damaging politics takes a personal turn, undermining even what we are able to call home. . . . The greatest strength of these nine stories is Lee’s ability to locate them in the strange and brutal dimensions of lives distorted by dictatorship, exile, expatriation, and even hunger. Her stories also slide through the quiet violence of divorce, loneliness, parenthood, and erotic attraction. . . . Lee is a patient storyteller with a distanced, mostly omniscient point of view. Such a sweeping, plain-style narration is essential for lacing together a collection that unfolds in three countries. The even tone lifts these stories out of melodrama and turns them instead into pristine things that are as unsparing as they are compassionate.”

—The Daily Beast

“Identity, loneliness and survival haunt Drifting House, Krys Lee’s debut collection of short stories. . . . Ms Lee has a natural gift for storytelling and her writing displays a rare clarity. The dark images embedded in these stories reveal a world ravaged by pain and conflict, and explore what drives human beings at their most primordial.”

—The Economist

“If you are a short story lover, a reader who isn't afraid of true things, a person who knows every other person around them hides multitudes of both light and dark secrets, read Drifting House.”

—The Seattle Post Intelligencer

“However dark their fates might be, Lee blesses her characters with passions forged from the flames of suffering. The survivors of Drifting House are those who dare to find their salvation in small moments of beauty and connection, who have endured great losses, but pick themselves up and keep moving forward. . . . Drifting House reminds us of the illumination that comes from recognizing the shakiness of the ground under our feet. We tell ourselves that we are in control of our stories, but we never are. Lee’s survivors know the truth: Control isn’t possible. Once we accept that, we take our first, small steps toward grace.”

—Heather Havrilesky, The Los Angeles Review of Books

“Stunning. . . . There is a stark beauty to Lee’s writing. Drifting House offers a poignant glimpse into lives divided by history. . . . If you were to substitute the copious soju (a strong Korean spirit similar to sake) consumed here for bourbon, this could be Raymond Carver.”

—The Daily Telegraph (London)

“As they sift through the emotional wreckage left by civil war, political brutalities, financial collapse, and the prosaic details of getting by in places they're unwelcome, the individuals in Drifting House reach for resilience amid nearly unimaginable hardship. Lee, who splits her time between South Korea and the United States, is an empathetic chronicler of a perpetually displaced people, writing with the immediacy of someone who has lived their experience.”

—SF Weekly

“What wonderful and haunting worlds Krys Lee illuminates—a goose for a goose father, a sympathetic wife made bold by her husband’s infidelity—all facets of a Korea and a Korean America made new by this exciting writer’s entrancing vision.”

—Janice Y. K. Lee, author of New York Times bestselling The Piano Teacher

“Impressive. . . . The moral battle between good and evil that resonates through this collection reminds the reader of much of Flannery O’Connor’s short fiction.”

—Asia Literary Review

“Krys Lee has written a book of unforgettable stories, each one building on the other to create a complex, moving portrait of contemporary Korea and its diaspora. She guides us surely through the fallout of war, immigration, and financial crisis, always alert to the possibility of tenderness, transcendence, and even humor along the way. Lee is a writer who really understands loneliness, but her voice is so appealing, and her perceptions so wise, that we feel all the less lonely for knowing her characters and experiencing their lives.”

—Sarah Shun-lien Bynum, National Book Award finalist; author of Ms. Hempel Chronicles

“Set in both America and Korea, these are subtle, haunting stories that explore the lives of people caught between two cultures.”

—The Sunday Times (London)

“Almost every story in Krys Lee’s collection Drifting House pulls you in, and begins to work with you as patiently as a novel. A bit of deft characterization here, a subtle pull at your sympathies there, and twenty pages pass quickly by.”

—The Seattle Star

“Drifting House . . . lays bare [the] wounds of Korea and draws the reader into this fractured world. . . . Krys Lee does not work on a small canvas, and her vision and imagination startle and shock.”

—The Washington Independent Review of Books

"Krys Lee’s fascinating stories take place in gaps in the world, the surreal places that are in fact reality for her Korean characters, both at home and abroad. In those interstices there is horror and humor; there is sometimes haunting sadness, and there is on occasion grace."

—Jane Hamilton, New York Times bestselling author of A Map of the World and The Book of Ruth

“Affecting stories about the conflicts between Korean and American culture. . . . Lee writes with a clarity and simplicity of style that discloses deep and conflicting emotions about cultural identity.”

—Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

“Breathtaking debut. . . . Readers in search of exquisite short fiction beyond their comfort zone—groupies of Jhumpa Lahiri ... and Yoko Tawada—will thrill to discover Drifting House.”

—Library Journal (Starred Review)

“Sometimes, with luck, passion, and great skill, fiction accomplishes things nothing else can, things of magical and abiding significance. Krys Lee’s debut story collection is such a book. Drifting House is important for its heartbreaking depiction of the often horrifying plight of North and South Korean immigrants struggling to find dignity and self-definition in their new lives. It introduces us to a subject as old as human struggle itself, and a powerful new writer of highly lyrical gifts.”

—Philip Schultz, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Failure

“A shimmering, variegated collection. . . . Masterful. . . . Lee reminds readers . . . that hardship is worth paying attention to, not just for the empathy it draws forth, or for the strength found in characters who manage to come out on the other side, but for its ability to connect people across time and cultures.”

—BookBrowse

“Krys Lee’s debut collection literally takes your breath away in its unflinching portrayl of displacement. . . . Even in her darkest, most startling depictions, Lee is full of grace.”

—Pop Culture Nerd

“[An] excellent debut. . . . Lee explores and highlights several aspects of Koreans and Korean Americans that are never discussed outside of the confines of those cultures. . . . Lee manages to accomplish a massive task: to explore modern Koreans and their place in both the U.S. and at home, in Seoul. Lee herself straddles both of these cultures, and proves to be a worthy ambassador for both.”

—Hyphen

We All Live in Drifting Houses
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
Drifting House by Krys Lee is one of the very best collections of short stories I have ever read. They are right up there with Alice Munroe. The stories are all about Korean people, their culture in Korea and the immigrant experience in the United States. The stories share several thematic elements: loss, separation, solitude, a sense of being out of place and situations of violence that are often painful to read. The author examines the limits of what human beings are capable of and how they endure.

In A Temporary Marriage, a woman leaves Korea for the United States in the hopes of finding her daughter who her ex-husband kidnapped. She enters into a marriage of convenience in order to have the correct paperwork to be in the United States. Here, she searches for her daughter in California.

At the Edge of the World is about Mark, "nine years old and he knew everything". He is more like nine years old going on forty. However, he is friendless and the other children his age torment him in endless ways. When a girl his age, Chanhee, moves in next door, they befriend each other. Chanhee's mother is a shaman and Mark's mother is a christian who despises shamanism. When Mark's father visits the shaman, all hell breaks loose in the family.

The Pastor's son is about the cycle of family violence and abuse. After the death of his mother, Jingyu and his father move to Seoul where his father marries his dead wife's best friend, a promise he'd made to his first wife before she died. There ensues a family from hell despite the pastor supposedly being a man of god. The pastor's son says, in a moment of insight, "I saw the violence that my father had grown up with and passed down to us. I felt what my father must have always carried with him: the terrible war, its long ago shadow that cast far beyond and drew you in like a thirsty curse".

In The Goose Father, Gilho is a goose father, a man in Korea who supports his family living overseas in the United States. To assuage his loneliness, he takes in a tenant, Wuseong. Gilho's life becomes transformed and reaffirmed in ways he could never have predicted.

The Salaryman is a very powerful story about the financial crisis in Korea and a worker who is let go. He gives everything he has to his wife and children and takes to living in the streets - desolate, lonely and hopeless.

Drifting House is about two young boys and their crippled sister who trek from N. Korea to China to try to find their mother who deserted them. The life of poverty they live is inconceivable; "an eleven-year-old with a body withering on two years of boiled tree bark, mashed roots, and the occasional grilled rat and fried crickets on a stick". Finding an acorn that can be divided in three portions is a real gift to them. Some of the people in their village have even reverted to cannabalism in order to stave off their hunger.

The Believer is one of the more violent stories in the book. Jenny had always believed in god and was even attending seminary school. However, she loses faith when she comes home to the site of a violent murder committed by her mother. Their family falls apart and despite the excrutiating emotional violence that Jenny endures, her search for god continues.

The stories are all about people who are dislodged from their lives in some way, passing time until something new might possibly occur. Many are waiting for an epiphany that is just beyond reach. They are caught up in the cycle of poverty, the immigrant experience, family violence, and the absoluteness of time. Some are dealing with sexual issues or sexual awakenings. They all live in a drifting house, some carrying their homes on their backs and others going from one land to another. This is a brilliant book and I highly recommend it.

Beautiful but Frustrating
By Suzi
At times, I felt like Lee's writing was beautiful in a simple but poised manner. There were passages that were so heart-wrenching that I could have cried. Lee often writes with wonderful and stunning imagery, that you feel like you can understand why this collection of short stories has received so many good reviews and praise. However - for me - there was as much frustration in reading these short stories as there was wonder,if not more. Her painfully literal translations of Korean phrases is jarring and often disrupts the flow of her work. While you know that the characters are not actually saying these literal sentences in English for someone who may not be familiar with the Korean language, it's awkward to have these well-developed characters full of personality saying such mechanical sentences to one another. They words lose their meaning when you make them so exact and the characters are no longer as believable. When my upperclassmen ask "' '''?" (Pap mogosso)they aren't asking if I have had rice exactly but simply whether or not I've eaten anything yet. These literal translations are so distracting and that is such a shame.

There were also times when characters would do something that seemed to clash with everything else the character has done and who the character has been explained to be. I feel like the juxtapositions could be truly meaningful, and I'm sure that they were written purposely, but without some kind of justification of these seemingly bizarre change in action or personality, they detract from the integrity of the characters. I also found some of the texts to be awfully word, or there were sensory overloads that took away from the deeper meaning of the story. Krys Lee has so much to say and so much too share, but so much of it gets lost along the way. Reading this collection I felt like a professor who has a brilliant student who just doesn't see the value or the point in making that extra effort in their work. I feel that you can always read Lee's potential to be a truly great writer, but she rarely seemed to fulfill that potential for me. Her work often left me with a feeling that she has an uncomfortable detachment to the subjects she writes about, I felt like she struggled to express these things that she didn't fully know herself, particularly in her story "Drifting House".

But, having said all of this, I would like to say that there were several stories in this collection that I absolutely adored - "At the Edge of the World", "The Goose Father", and "The Salaryman". And "The Pastor's Son" and "A Small Sorrow" almost made the cut as well. In these, Krys Lee effectively portrays these very human and genuine characters with real struggles that a large audience can identify with. They are Korean, and their Korean identities is a strong part of who they are and why they are but these factors don't overwhelm who they are as individuals or override their unique personal conflicts. In my opinion these stories - where Lee isn't trying too hard to present everthing as Korean or Korean-American, but simply showing us people and their everyday battles - are the most beautiful of all. I think that if she can find her voice and continue to write honest and penetrating stories like these I would quickly add her to my list of favorite authors. I honestly think these five stories make buying the collection of nine worth it, if only to get an idea of what she may come up with next.

One dimensional
By Prunella K.
I read this book on the recommendation of the author of The Orphan Master's Son. Unfortunately for this book, I read it immediately after The Orphan Master's Son, and it suffered by comparison. The process of degeneration in the Salaryman stories was brilliantly laid out. But the other stories, excepting the one about the couple with the unconventional marriage, were about people exhibiting extreme behavior that was hard to empathize with. It seemed as though immigration brought out tendencies already present in their personalities but this was not discussed. The book needed some balance.
