Princess Helena (1846-1923) was the third daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This is a well-researched biography of Princess Helena, daughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Helena is one of the lesser-known, but hardest working royals. Her public and charitable works set an example that is still followed by the British Royal Family today. If you are interested in the Royal Family or the Victorian Era, you will like this book.

About the Author
Karen Timberlake is Professor Emerita of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 34 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition to Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eleventh Edition, she is also the author of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: Structures of Life, Third Edition, with its accompanying Study Guide and Selected Solutions Manual, and Basic Chemistry, Third Edition, with the accompanying Study Guide and Selected Solutions, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manual.
Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous scientific and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). In 1987, she was the Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Textbook Authors Association for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eighth Edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she received the Texty” Textbook Excellence Award from the Textbook Authors Association for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence (LACTE) and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students.

Her husband, William Timberlake, who has contributed to writing this text, is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Los Angeles Harbor College, where he taught preparatory and organic chemistry for 36 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University and his master’s degree in organic chemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles. When the Professors Timberlake are not writing textbooks, they relax by hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants, cooking, playing tennis, and taking care of their grandchildren.

Now this how a textbook should be done

Let me first say that I've failed Chemistry twice and the third time managed to pass with a C-. It just isn't my cup of tea. When I got this textbook (from a different seller and not through Amazon) I figured I would hate it as much as I always did. I came into the subject with preconceived notions and the 'I just can't do it' attitude. So far my grade average is 97%, and I LOVE this book.
It's so well written, so simple to follow that I'd gone through the first chapter without even meaning to. It actually made Chemistry interesting to me which is a HUGE accomplishment. The vast amount of ways you can test yourself on the information is ridiculously helpful. You can't even get through a tenth of a chapter without a section that taps you on the shoulder to ask 'So, what have we learned?' At the end of each Section, there is a pile of 'Questions and Problems', then at the end of each chapter there are two additional ways to test yourself. 'Understanding the Concepts' does just what it says, it tests your understanding of the concepts covered in the chapter. Then you have an additional list of questions and problems. If you do every single problem and question you come across in every Chapter, by the end, you not only know the information but you understand it.
Love, love, love this book. Can't believe I've gone my whole life hating Chemistry only to now find out that it's pretty freaking awesome. This author knows her stuff when it comes to the different ways people learn.

Chemistry by Karen C. Timberlake

This is an excellent book. I tutor students who are going into the allied health professions, and some have never had chemistry before now. The chapters are clearly written with sample problems after each topic and end-of-chapter problems. I refer to it for exercises for my students. It is the best that I have found so far.

Terrific chemistry text for advanced high school home school students!

My comments actually refer to the 9th edition of this excellent text. I used that edition with my daughter during her senior year of home school high school. The writing is excellent, the figures are beautiful and right on target, the numerous problems at the end of each chapter thoroughly cover every topic, and the answers to the odd problems really help build confidence (and make grading easy). Professor Karen Timberlake includes her email and responds quickly, cheerfully, and helpfully. This book was excellent preparation for freshman chemistry and organic chemistry (the classes for majors) at the university.

Love this Book, Love this Series!

I honestly love this series. I'm always anxiously awaiting the next book and the chance to read and review it. This is one of my favorite Christian Fiction series.

Jake is a tough nut to crack. Because of the horrific events surrounding his military service, Jake suffers from PTSD. In order to keep it all together, he has hardened himself and built walls of protection. It's how he copes. But, Lyndie has loved Jake forever and she is determined to find a way in and make Jake love her again.

I love Lyndie. She is determined but always gentle and loving. She tries to understand and she wants to help. Not pity, but compassion and empathy. I think people who have grown up with a special needs sibling in their home have a special knack for understanding and loving people better. That natural instinct for compassion and patience is so attractive. This is what Lyndie brings to the relationship.

The slow progression for Jake is so satisfying to read. I loved the flow of the book and I loved learning in bits about both Jake and Lyndie. This is one of those "feel good" books leave you so content in the end. It's a great addition to this Porter Family series. I loved it!

Remarkable New Novel In The Porter Family Series!

Becky Wade gives us the third book in her Porter family series. This one features Jake Porter, former Marine who suffers from PTSD. Suffers so much from it that it seriously hinders his life.

Lyndie James is back in Holley, Texas after moving from there to California as a preteen. She and Jake had been best friends until she moved away. Jake hires her to exercise his Thoroughbreds against his better judgement.

Will Lyndie's optimism and happy spirit help Jake come out of the darkness he's been living in? Will Jake allow God back into his heart?

Becky Wade has created some very real characters in this book. She always does, though. Emotions run high, their depths seriously stretched. I love it when I can read a book and feel how the characters feel. I do with Becky's books.

And what I love most about her books is her ability to preach Christ. Her characters are flawed and in need of God's grace and she is not afraid to lead them there. When you pick up a Christian fiction book written by Becky Wade, you get Christ. You get him in such a way that your own spirit bears witness with hers. She believes what she writes. Of that I'm sure.

There were scenes in this book that tore at my heart, others filled my heart with joy and still others that had me weeping with happiness. God is good! No matter what. No matter how bad we hurt. No matter how hard life gets. God is good. ALL the time!

Great Book

This is the third book in the Porter family series. It can be read as a stand alone, but I am grateful that I had the opportunity to read the first two books before this one.

Jake and Lyndie are wonderful characters who seemed like they could be real people to me. They both have challenges that effect their attitude and their drive to succeed in life.

Lyndie has a disabled sister. The compassion and love that she shows are admirable. Lyndie is loyal, smart, and talented. The love that she exibits toward her sister shows in the way she treats the horses she works with.

Jake was a marine. The wounds he carries from his time in Iraq are not all visible to the eye. He has a scar on his face, but his real battle is in the PTSD that is a part of his everyday life. I really liked that the book looked into a topic that is the battle that extends long after a soldier leaves the military. The book looks at how everyday situations can impact a person struggling with PTSD.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It is clean and has a Christian theme.

I confront the bogeymen of racism, xenophobia, and ignorance prompted by such demographic changes through answering questions put to me by readers of my ¡Ask a Mexican! column in California's OC Weekly. I challenge you to find a more entertaining way to immerse yourself in Mexican culture that doesn't involve a taco-and-enchilada combo.

OKAY, WHY DO MEXICANS PARK THEIR CARS ON THE FRONT LAWN?

Where do you want us to park them? The garage we rent out to a family of five? The backyard where we put up our recently immigrated cousins in tool-shack-cum-homes? The street with the red curbs recently approved by city planners? The driveway covered with construction materials for the latest expansion of la casa? The nearby school parking lot frequented by cholos on the prowl for a new radio? The lawn is the only spot Mexicans can park their cars without fear of break-ins, drunken crashes, or an unfortunate keying. Besides, what do you think protects us from drive-bys? The cops?

In Arellano's popular Orange County Weekly column "¡Ask a Mexican!" now widely syndicated and gathered in this acerbic volume, he answers serious, curious, and sometimes hateful but mostly irreverent questions about Mexicans. This book compiles what are presumably the best question-and-answer exchanges over the past two years, under topics including language, sex, immigration and food. Arellano wittily defuses bigotry and mocks stereotypes with his often well-researched replies. To the inquiry on the authenticity of flour vs. corn tortillas, he explains that the Spaniards created the former. "Why do Mexicans wear their clothes when swimming?" is a recurring question among Arellano's readers; his answer: good manners. In response to the vitriolic "What is it about the word illegal that Mexicans don't understand," he points out that U.S. employers don't understand the word either. The author's relentless irony and reclamation of derogatory terms (e.g., "wab," the Orange County version of wetback) is not for the faint of heart, but this approach is a welcome reprieve from common tiptoeing around the fraught subjects of race relations and immigration. The Mexican as myth debunker and provider of historical context

Gustavo Arellano's "Ask a Mexican" is a brilliant book. What's obvious when reading a book's length worth of his answers is how well-researched they are. It's a nice balance of referenced scholarship, combined with the observations of a street-savvy guy. First-time readers beware though: Arellano's work is culled from columns that appear in alternative weeklies, and it's got the language to prove it. It can be jarring and off-putting at times. However, most times it works, because the questions match in tone.

Arellano's main role here is as myth debunker and as one who tries to put Mexican immigration in a historical context for his readers. I've selected this passage from p. 40 as emblematic of his approach. A reader writes "Why don't Mexicans want to assimilate and accept our way of life?" The Mexican answers (in part) that "(i)n the case of reverence for one's roots, it boils down thusly: gabachos long-removed from Ellis Island can love their ancestors without shame because they're the descendants of immigrants, and immigrants made this nation great; Mexicans can't because they _are_ immigrants, and immigrants are turning America into the Third World."

Like that opinion or not, you have to give Arellano credit for superbly crafted sentences like that. The book is rife with them. It makes for a great read.
