Great Book

I am a student from China. I am in Shanghai. I am 15 years old. Though this book is for age 9 - 12, I thought it was not bad for me, because English is my second language, so I bought it for about $6 in Shanghai. It is really a nice book and tell me the things which I don't know. I don't think the author know that the book will be bought in such a long distance away and I am looking forward to getting full understand in it and I wish I could.

Fantastic Book! I read this book in 2 days! Pictures are great! It's not like those yucky fiction books, but instead it's non-fiction, it's how it really happened! I read this and thought it was great, and I gave it to my friend to read and he thought it was great to! I highly reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys history or Titanic!

Wonderful start to a new series!

Our story starts out with Garrett exploring a non-protected area of the National Forest in the Pacific Northwest. He's trying to save the area from being clear-cut and is on the search for proof that some flora or fauna is native to that area and depends on that forest for survival. Well he gets a little more then he wishes for when he thinks he's found a new type of hummingbird and then stumbles over a Kermode or Spirit Bear. He's so focused on the two discoveries that as he's filming, he gets a little too close to the edge of the ravine and takes a serious tumble knocking himself unconscious.

Along comes Bryson, who rescues Garrett and, even though he shouldn't, takes him home to help him heal. Bryson is a hereditary Gatekeeper who watches over a door guarding the path between Earth and Terra. Taking Garrett home could mean he'll allow someone else to know the way into the other world. Once Garrett wakes up, Bryson realizes it's not the door to Terra he has to watch over, it's a sexy explorer who might steal his heart.

This book combined all the very best elements in storytelling, at least for this reviewer/reader. It had captivating characters, an engaging and very readable storyline, and descriptive world building. I've been a fan of S.J. Frost's with the Conquest series, but this book reminds me of so many of the fantasy books I read when I was younger. Well, except for the oh, so sexy relationship between our two main characters.

I totally fell in love with the two main characters. Bryson, the courageous and giving white witch, and Garrett, the explorer who is able to be completely enthralled by the world around him. Ms. Frost also introduces us to a fantastic cast of secondary characters including one romance reading dragon, a sarcastic Brownie, an assassin who's head over feet entranced by a Lark, Torran who's tongue-tied by the book's end, and a dangerous, mysterious Elf.

I anxiously await the next book in this series, and all the ones that I know will follow! ~ Reviewed by Chris

Time is running out for biologist and environmentalist Garrett Evergard; he must find a compelling reason to preserve the unspoiled Pacific Northwest rainforest from destruction. Fortunately, Garrett's encounter with a spirit bear, as well as the witch Bryson Summers, leads to the salvation of both the rainforest and Garrett.

To The Other Side is the first book in the Terra Book series. The plot is a heartwarming romance. The setting is beautifully detailed. Centuries ago, the discrimination against anyone different from society's majority so prevalent on the Earth side caused a mass influx into non-prejudice Terra. However, the European social composition of the aristocratic and poor, along with power-hungry villains, still subsists in Terra. Terra is also inhibited by all manner of rare creatures with distinct personalities. The fascinating characters are persuasive.

Bryson is the designated gatekeeper; his job is to maintain balance between Earth and the dimensional Terra. This is a key position because the destruction of one side of the planet could also destroy the other side. Bryson is an enormously compassionate witch who uses his magic to heal people, especially the poor. Bryson lives inside a tree that borders an enchanted valley where sacred animals are protected from those who seek to kill them. Garrett has the same love of nature as Bryson which makes Garrett and Bryson the perfect soul mates.

S.J. Frost has created numerous intriguing components in this impressive saga that I found exceedingly enjoyable. The character descriptions, the amusing interaction between the characters, the strong bond of friendship, plus the good versus evil conflict are elements prominently illustrated in To The Other Side. Also, the book cover magnificently depicts the world of Terra.

Biologist and environmentalist Garrett Evergard is hiking through the woods in the Pacific Northwest trying the find the means to save the woods from being clear cut by a developer. All Garrett needs is to find one species of plant or animal rare enough that calls these woods on the edge of the Olympic National Forest home to get them designated as a protected habitat. Little did Garrett know that he was about to stumble into the most amazing find of his life. When Garrett spies a rare spirit or Kermode bear, a white colored black bear that resides only in a specific habitat. Focused only on the spirit bear, a missed step finds Garrett falling into the ravine, an accident that will forever change his life.

Bryson Summers is a Native American, one of a long line of witches and Gatekeepers. Bryson lives a life of two worlds, one on each side of a door in his cottage that straddles the border between them. One is Earth, and on the other side, a magical place called Terra. Here unicorns, dragons of all sizes, and magical beings like brownies and elves live with humans that live and work as they did long ago. The spirit bear calls to Bryson when Garrett falls. Garrett's injuries are severe and Bryson takes him home to heal and recover.

As Garrett recuperates, the men find their mutual attraction deepens until Bryson finds himself dreading Garrett's departure, something that Garrett is also not looking forward to. But the forest and his job awaits. And Bryson's attention is needed to a growing danger from a power mad duke capable of great evil. When Bryson disappears, Garrett will do anything he can to save him but what can a mere human do against such great magic? Garrett is about to find out.

In this first novel in her new series Terra, S.J. Frost takes the idea of parallel worlds and makes it fresh with her own twists and ideas. From the moment we enter the story and watch Garrett confronted with two tiny dragons zipping from flower to flower in a manner akin to hummingbirds, the reader knows they are in for a delightful time in a realm that sparkles with the strangely beautiful and abounds with fantasy creatures we will never get enough of. The Floras or flower dragons are tiny jewels and just one of the many dragon species that spill over the pages and into our hearts. I say one of many because waiting for us inside Bryson's cabin is Wynn, a small sized white dragon with an affinity for bodice ripper romances and Oreo cookies. And more equally wondrous creations quickly follow on the heels of his appearance (although Wynnie is a heart grabber for sure). Bryson the Gatekeeper is able to talk to them all because of his deep connection to the Earth and all its animals, no matter what side they dwell on. Terra is constructed along the lines of Medieval times. It lacks any form of technology and its societal structure is along those of royalty/peasant/serf strata. In fact, all those elements and species Earth lacks can now be found on the other side. Magic, faeries, dragons, elves, brownies and more to come I expect as more stories unfold and the series expands our knowledge of Terra and its kingdoms.

In addition to the wonderful job S.J. Frost does in building her series universe, we are given an endearing and quixotical core group of characters to connect and empathize with. To The Other Side deals primarily with the meeting and romance of Garrett, the biologist and Bryson, the Gatekeeper but Frost also introduces a host of companions whose stories are sure to follow this one. There is Torren, a Dragon Speaker, who can talk to every type of dragons and mourns the fact that dragon slayers are allowed to prowl the kingdom killing dragons without cause or the slightest hesitation. Zain, the Black Fox, an assassin for hire and known thief. Zain has already found his love, Larkin, but there's a problem there and its a deep one. Larkin, a bard, is a small, beautiful man with a gift of conversing with the dead, a problem when the man you love is a stone cold killer. And theirs is not the only untenable or hopeless love that Frost reveals in this first story. Another that will appear is an elf Aleric, who sad past and quest is surely deserving of his own story and HEA. And Boggy the brownie who loves to clean and grump about them all. Land's End, Bryson's home, serves as their informal headquarters and way house when they are all in the area. Each character is beautifully defined, with the depth and breadth of personality needed to bring them to life and make us care for them all.

Frost has a flask full of complications for Garrett and Bryson to overcome in their own quest for love and a future. Bryson is tied down to his Gate and is long lived due to his connection to the Gate and Earth/Terra. He is also a powerful witch whose gifts are needed in the nearby villages. Garrett too has an important job to finish, that of saving the forest where the Gate is located. He needs to find a rare species to save those woods from a developer and in finding it, it may have found true love as well. There are magical hurdles to overcome as well as realistic mundane ones and watching these two men surmount each and every one is a true joy.

S,J. Frost tells her story with a well developed sense to humor to go along with the pathos. The pace is a little slow in the beginning as Frost is laying the foundation for the story and the series, but once in place the story takes flight. And we and the characters are in for a marvelous ride.

Next up is Torren's story and that of Sir Karrick Brenton a Knight of the Crown who enters into the story at the very end of To The Other Side. I can't wait. Already this series has grabbed my attention and my heart. I can't wait to see where the author takes us with this group of characters on their journeys to romance and true love.

Not what I expected

SPOILERS HERE AND THERE.

I really don't know about this one, Gade didn't really redeem him self, ok maybe at the end just a bit. I get that you like it kinky and everything but what about when all that starts to spill over towards your daughter, yea he says he wont hurt her, he's good to her. but he did say he wanted full control of everything and everyone, like you cant have friends if he does not approve, you cant have a phone either. you cant speak to men at all. I mean full control and as for her daughter she will do as she's told and she cant date until she's 16 years old and he has to approve, I see a very rebellious teen coming on. I really didn't enjoy the story because Gade was so cruel, he didn't ease up and just went into everything with rage. Yes he has issues but he was borderline abusive. I don't know about this story it was a bit hard for me to swallow and I have read many BDSM books and non of them were so crazy aggressive and full of crazy rage. Well maybe a bit of crazy but never so full of Rage towards the person you claim you love. Now Ian poor guy we all have skeletons and he sure had his, but he was a good guy, he tried so hard to help Kayla and get her away from his brother but she kept going back to Gade, even when he beat her because he didn't believe her that she was pregnant with his baby that was the last straw for me, Gade just went out the window for me. She still defended Gade and went back. Ian tried to reason with her and tell her that she should think about her daughter growing up in that environment, she still didn't listen. All in all this last book was not one I was happy about reading. There's a weird ending that I really didn't care about just because Gade in my eyes was just plain crazy and Kayla loved it, not caring if she dragged her daughter into that mess.

It was ok...

Alrighty…so, I get since the whole 50 Shades thing, that there’s been an ongoing trend of BDSM books…with no end in sight. And I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m a little intrigued by the Dom/Sub & bondage side of it, just not so much the S/M or Sadist/Masochism part. I’m just not a fan of pain…yep, I take Tylenol when I’ve got a headache, buy the Neosporin with the added pain relief meds in it and made sure EVERY medical staff person that walked into my room when I went into labor with my son, knew I needed the epidural as soon as it was possible to get it…I think I even told someone from the janitorial dept. This is probably the reason why I kept going back and forth with really liking and really disliking this book.

Ok, as far as the writing goes…character and plot development, I give high snaps to the author, Gemma James. Gemma can definitely write the hell outta of a sex scene too! And I was really hooked with the entire concept of the female lead, Kayla, having to decide between jail or becoming a sex slave to her scorching hot boss, Gage, after he caught her embezzling money from his company in order to pay for experimental medical treatments for her 3 year old daughter diagnosed with Leukemia. What I didn’t like and for me, was an absolute turn-off, was when the BDSM play between Kayla and Gage didn’t just border on abuse…but crossed the line, way, way over it. I understand that there’s a certain blend of pleasure/pain involved in this type of sexual activity, but it just seems that when the end result leaves a participant with bruises, welts and possible scarring, both physically and mentally, then it just doesn’t translate into mutually satisfying and positive experience to me.

Oh crikey, crikey, crikey!!

Gemma - Lady...... you have left my head reeling! Oh crapola what a read this is, it's very, very, VERY dark bordering disturbing and whilst I get all of what went on I am really bashing my head to agree with her submission and his continual near pyschotic rage and jealousy.

This book is perfect in it's publication, there is not a single typo, no grammatical errors. It is presented at the top of it's game and kinda what I love about it is, I don't agree with his behaviour and oh that one night that Kayla with him why the hell she didn't let rip into him I'll never know, she had her chance and blew it in my eyes. I am so furious with Kayla for allowing him to continue his treatment of her but do you know what I get that people act and react differently to me. This IS how some would find their peace and where their heart would lay, they would sacrifice bits of themselves to stay with their 'true' love. Me though I would have kicked Gage out on his arse and made him get himself sorted before taking him back. How he treated her for that two weeks (sorry you'll have to read the book) was making me furious - I had red steam blowing from my brain at what a 'sh*t' he was being. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of brutal love and romantic love shown by Gage and Ian that whether it's light or dark they both loved her in their own ways.

There was one part I really didn't agree with, Gage was completely downright cruel, I think only 1 in 100 would have gone back after what he did but there is that fact that 1 would have gone back, so I get that Kayla did not do what I would have done, but then I would never ever be in her position in the first place. I often found the brutal love shocking but even though I didn't agree with it I get their relationship so I cannot knock stars off for my palate struggling with some of the content. I had to knock A star off though because it was either that or knock Gage's block off!

So I say this potential readers, if you loved #1 to #3 then definitely read this, you'll get a HEA but how it gets there is not what your expecting. Try adding disturbing, shocking, anger invoking, frustration at events, lingering torments, turbulent, potential screaming at the heroine to just run and that this book is going to mess with your romanticised head on the run up to and getting the HEA. Then if you can cope with those insights you'll get this book and you'll see past that this is no way a normal love story - because oh boy it's heavy, extremely heavy!

Coming of Age inside the Well of a T-34

Roughly 800,000 women served in the Soviet Armed Forces during World War II (also known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War): as pilots, snipers, machine gunners, tank crew members, and partisans. Of these, a quarter were decorated, and 89 received the highest honor, the Hero of the Soviet Union.

A number of children also fought in the war. Prior to WWII, the age of conscription for men was 19; just before the war began, it was lowered to 17. Teenagers and children fought in insurrections, belonged to youth movements, and in some cases, orphans were allowed join the Red Army in an official capacity. (Source: Wikipedia.)

In the graphic novel series KATUSHA: GIRL SOLDIER OF THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR, Wayne Vansant shines a light on these lesser-known aspects of World War II.

Refugees from their native country of Ukraine, BOOK 2: THE SHAKING OF THE EARTH sees Katusha and her adopted older sister Milla (“Big and Little Tymoshenko”) arrive in Russia just in time for the bombing of Stalingrad on August 23, 1942. The young women quickly graduate from partisans to militia members, as they’re recruited to defend the women and children still remaining in the city. In an attempt to keep them safe (wherein “safe” is a relative term), their father later arranges for them to attend tank driving school in Chelyabinsk. After several months of study, they’re sent to the front lines to fight with the Red Army, where Milla earns the honor of Hero of the Soviet Union for her bravery at the Battle of Prokhorovka in July 1943.

Katusha is just seventeen years old at the outset of Book 2; she celebrates her 18th birthday on the battlefield. KATUSHA is a coming of age story that takes place under the harshest conditions imaginable. Along with her budding feelings for an older officer, Katusha must come to grips with the violence, loss, and deprivations that are part of everyday life during wartime.

The middle of three installments, I’m having a difficult time rating Book 2: I entered to win copies of Books 1 and 2 through Goodreads, but only scored Book 2. And I’m not sure I enjoyed the story enough to purchase Book 1 on my own (or at least not at the current prices). While the war stories are easy enough to follow, I feel like I’m missing quite a bit of background information on the characters, especially Katusha and Milla, and their time in Ukraine prior to the beginning on WWII. (Um, Milla is sleeping with her uncle? I know she’s adopted, but still!) If you’re interested in the series, definitely read them in sequence from the beginning!

That said, the artwork is above par and the storytelling, engaging. There’s quite a bit of discussion about weaponry (particularly tanks) and battle strategy, which makes sense, but mostly bored me to tears. Vansant touches upon the female experience during wartime, though not in the detail I’d hoped. Milla’s backstory is especially engaging; I’d love for Vansant to delve into collectivization in Ukraine further. I was surprised to see so many families serving together (e.g., Katusha, Milla, and their Uncle Taras).

Katusha and Milla elect to fight as Russians in the “Patriotic War” in the hope that they may someday return home to their native Ukraine – making the series title somewhat ironic. Should they find their way back in Book 3, it will only be at a great cost.

Second of two--so far

This second book of the adventures of Katusha during World War II covers late 1942 through July 1943. This includes the Battle of Stalingrad and the creation of male/female tank crews by the Soviet high command. There's no shying away from brutality but Katusha manages to remain a sweet character despite the horrors of the war she is a direct participant in. Again, as with the first book, this second volume is highly recommended.

Hopefully The End Of The Series!

This is the fourth book in this series.Our hero is once again Christain

Gillette.He was elected Chairman of Everest by one vote.Since being the chairman he has had phenomenal sucess at making money for the firm.

In this newest book there is once again a plot to do Christain in.Victoria Graham,the chairperson of PennMu and members of the Washington D.C. power trust have hire Melissa Hart to get close to Christian Gillette and keep them informed of his plans.Victoria Graham and her cohorts have also hired Steven Sanchez a contract killer to deal

with Christian Gillette.

Christian Gillette is called upon by President Jesse Wood to act as a laison in Cuba.Wood is the first black American President.Cuba is about to undergo a coup.Wood wants Christian to talk to the leaders of the coup,

a group called Secret Six.Victoria Graham and her coconspirators want to use this event to nail President Wood and Christian for their part.They

want revenge on Christian for stopping the nano technology plot.

This would have been a good book if you would have left out the Cuba

plan.This dropped the book several levels.Our friend Quentin Stiles was also killed in this latest book.I hope that Frey goes back to writing good business books.

A Dissenting Opinion

This is the fourth in a series and although other reviewers have said the predecessors are better, I do not think I will indulge. I did not think this book was very good.

The premise of this book is that a rich capitalist is, for some unfathomable reason, picked by the president to decide if a group of revolutionaries in Cuba are the right ones to accomplish a coup. Getting there is apparently the trick. As absolutely loveable as this icon of capitalism is, it is somewhat - and only somewhat - apparent that there are at least two groups who want to kill him. When and where and why are all left to the last pages. There are women all over the place fawning over him and yet possibly conspiring against him. Very little makes sense for the first 198 pages. The book is written with glances at all the characters a few pages at a time. These glances are as disorganized as the rest of the book. I am not sure why this is described as a "thriller". It was a hard journey to get to Cuba with many asides that did not add to the plot or the characters.

The characters are all cardboard cut-outs. How's this for an original character? The icon's best friend is his black security director who was saved from gangs by his grandmother who enlisted him in the Army. Of course, he was Special Ops and then retired to go into private security. That's about all the depth you get of him. No character had any particular depth, which you would expect from a fourth book in a series.

In the end, the parts do come together. The coup is accomplished in about 2 1/2 pages and Gillette, the star, is only in country for about 8 pages. It did not seem as if Mr. Frey knew how to get from point A, the assignment, to point B, the coup in Cuba. He tried to get all sorts of intrigue with love and spies, but it just didn't work. Just to complete the formulaic nature of this book. At the end, the star leaves, waling into the sunset. Literally.

I would suggest passing over this book. If you want corporate intrigue go with Finder's books and skip this one.

Redux

I liked the first few Frey novels of high finance and the people who deal with money - good and especially the bad, but now I have the feeling that I am re-reading the same book over and over. The writing is adequete, and the characters are interesting, but sorry to say it seems to be the same plot over and over. The author has come to a point where he needs to stretch a little more or risk losing his audience.

About the Author

Dr. MARK F. HORSTEMEYER earned a BS degree (with honors) from West Virginia University in mechanical engineering in 1985, an MS degree from Ohio State University in engineering mechanics in 1987, and a PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology in mechanical engineering in 1995. He is currently a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Mississippi State University (2002–present), holding the positions of Chief Technical Officer for the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems as well as the CAVS Chair in Computational Solid Mechanics. Previous to this, he worked 15 years at Sandia National Labs. He is an ASME and ASM Fellow and has won many awards including the R&D 100 Award, AFS Best Paper Award, Sandia Award for Excellence, Ralph E. Powe Research Award, and Ohio State's Thomas French Alumni Achievement Award.

Selling the future of engineering with ICME

I took Prof Horstemeyer's class which used this book as the textbook. I had no official background with ICME, but as a grad student, I had been trained in mechanical engineering. Horstemeyer presents the need for ICME and is pretty convincing in his argument in that much of the future of engineering will be shaped around ICME. A background in engineering/physics is needed to grasp some of the chapters, but the big ideas of ICME (Ch 1) can be understood by the average Joe. Since graduating, I've seen how the ICME paradigm shift can be implemented in the industry. It may take some time to get more people on board, but Horstemeyer's pioneering approach with this book is a must read for anyone wanting to see complete examples on how to fully implement ICME in their work.

This book explains well about the concept of the ICME. Since ICME is a kind of new concept in engineering, I needed something to help to understand it, and this book was very helpful. Several examples are included along with theory!
