About the Author
Napoleon Hill was born in 1883 in Virginia and died in 1970 after a long and successful career as a lecturer, an author, and as a consultant to business leaders. Think and Grow Rich is the all-time bestseller in its field, having sold 15 million copies worldwide, and sets the standard for today’s motivational thinking.
James Allen was born in Leicester, England, in 1864. He took his first job at age 15 to support his family, after his father was murdered while looking for work in America. Allen was employed as a factory knitter and a private secretary until the early twentieth century, when he became increasingly known for his motivational writing. His 1903 work As a Man Thinketh earned him worldwide fame as a prophet of inspirational thinking and influenced a who's-who of self-help writers, including Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, and Norman Vincent Peale. Allen died at age 47 in 1912.

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH
YOUR WILL POWER by Russell H. Conwell

The Author is much indebted to Mr.Merle Crowell of the American Magazine who
assisted most efficiently in the preparation of the facts herein contained.

I.

Success has no secret. Her voice is forever ringing through the market-place and crying in the wilderness, and the burden of her cry is one word—WILL. Any normal young man who hears and heeds that cry is equipped fully to climb to the very heights of life.

The message I would like to leave with the young men and women of America is a message I have been trying humbly to deliver from lecture platform and pulpit for more than fifty years. It is a message the accuracy of which has been affirmed and reaffirmed in thousands of lives whose progress I have been privileged to watch. And the message is this:Your future stands before you like a block of unwrought marble. You can work it into what you will. Neither heredity, nor environment, nor any obstacles superimposed by man can keep you from marching straight through to success, provided you are guided by a firm, driving determination and have normal health and intelligence.

Determination is the battery that commands every road of life. It is the armor against which the missiles of adversity rattle harmlessly. If there is one thing I have tried peculiarly to do through these years it is to indent in the minds of the youth of America the living fact that when they give WILL the reins and say “DRIVE” they are headed toward the heights.

The institution out of which Temple University, of Philadelphia, grew was founded thirty years ago expressly to furnish opportunities for higher education to poor boys and girls who are willing to work for it. I have seen ninety thousand students enter its doors. A very large percentage of these came to Philadelphia without money, but firmly determined to get an education. I have never known one of them to go back defeated. Determination has the properties of a powerful acid; all shackles melt before it.

Conversely, lack of will power is the readiest weapon in the arsenal of failure. The most hopeless proposition in the world is the fellow who thinks that success is a door through which he will sometime stumble if he roams around long enough. Some men seem to expect ravens to feed them, the cruse of oil to remain inexhaustible, the fish to come right up over the side of the boat at meal-time.

They believe that life is a series of miracles. They loaf about and trust in their lucky star, and boldly declare that the world owes them a living.

As a matter of fact the world owes a man nothing that he does not earn. In this life a man gets about what he is worth, and he must render an equivalent for what is given him. There is no such thing as inactive success.

My mind is running back over the stories of thousands of boys and girls I have known and known about, who have faced every sort of a handicap and have won out solely by will and perseverance in working with all the power that God had given them. It is now nearly thirty years since a young English boy came into my office. He wanted to attend the evening classes at our university to learn oratory.

“Why don’t you go into the law?” I asked him.

“I’m too poor! I haven’t a chance!” he replied, shaking his head sadly.

I turned on him sharply. “Of course you haven’t a chance,” I exclaimed, “if you don’t make up your mind to it!”

The next night he knocked at my door again. His face was radiant and there was a light of determination in his eyes.

“I have decided to become a lawyer,” he said, and I knew from the ring of his voice that he meant it.

Many times after he became mayor of Philadelphia he must have looked back on that decision as the turning point in his life.

I am thinking of a young Connecticut farm lad who was given up by his teachers as too weak-minded to learn.

He left school when he was seven years old and toiled on his father’s farm until he was twenty-one. Then something turned his mind toward the origin and development of the animal kingdom. He began to read works on zoology, and, in order to enlarge his capacity for understanding, went back to school and picked up where he left off fourteen years before. Somebody said to him, “You can get to the top if you will!”

He grasped the hope and nurtured it, until at last it completely possessed him. He entered college at twenty-eight and worked his way through with the assistance that we were able to furnish him. To-day he is a respected professor of zoology in an Ohio college.

Such illustrations I could multiply indefinitely. Of all the boys whom I have tried to help through college I cannot think of a single one who has failed for any other reason than ill health. But of course I have never helped any one who was not first helping himself. As soon as a man determines the goal toward which he is marching, he is in a strategic position to see and seize everything that will contribute toward that end.

Whenever a young man tells me that if he “had his way” he would be a lawyer, or an engineer, or what not, I always reply:

“You can be what you will, provided that it is something the world will be demanding ten years hence.”

This brings to my mind a certain stipulation which the ambition of youth must recognize. You must invest yourself or your money in a known demand. You must select an occupation that is fitted to your own special genius and to some actual want of the people. Choose as early as possible what your life-work will be. Then you can be continually equipping yourself by reading and observing to a purpose. There are many things which the average boy or girl learns in school that could be learned outside just as well.

Almost any man should be able to become wealthy in this land of opulent opportunity. There are some people who think that to be pious they must be very poor and very dirty. They are wrong. Not money, but the love of money, is the root of all evil. Money in itself is a dynamic force for helping humanity.

In my lectures I have borne heavily on the fact that we are all walking over acres of diamonds and mines of gold.

There are people who think that their fortune lies in some far country. It is much more likely to lie right in their own back yards or on their front door-step, hidden from their unseeing eye. Most of our millionaires discovered their fortunes by simply looking around them.

Recently I have been investigating the lives of four thousand and forty-three American millionaires. All but twenty of them started life as poor boys, and all but forty of them have contributed largely to their communities, and divided fairly with their employees as they went along. But, alas, not one rich man’s son out of seventeen dies rich.

But if a man has dilly-dallied through a certain space of wasted years, can he then develop the character—the motor force—to drive him to success? Why, my friend, will power cannot only be developed, but it is often dry powder which needs only a match. Very frequently I think of the life of Abraham Lincoln—that wonderful man! and I am thankful that I was permitted to meet him. Yet Abraham Lincoln developed the splendid sinews of his

will after he was twenty-one. Before that he was just a roving, goodnatured sort of a chap. Always have I regretted that I failed to ask him what special circumstance broke the chrysalis of his life and loosened the wings of his will.

Many years ago some of the students of Temple University held a meeting in a building opposite the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel. As they were leaving the building they noticed a foreigner selling peanuts on the opposite curb. While buying peanuts they got to talking with the fellow, and told him that any one could obtain an education if he was willing to work for it. Eagerly the poor fellow drank up all the information he could get. He enrolled at Temple University and worked his way through, starting with the elementary studies. He is to-day an eminent practising physician in the national capital.

Often I think of an office clerk who reached a decision that the ambitions which were stirring in his soul could be realized if he could only get an education. He attended our evening classes and was graduated with a B.S. degree. He is now the millionaire head of one of the largest brokerage houses in the country.

“Where there’s a will there’s a way!” But one needs to use a little common sense about selecting the way. A general may determine to win a victory, but if he hurls his troops across an open field straight into the leaden sweep of the enemy’s artillery he invites disaster and defeat. The best general lays his plans carefully, and advances his troops in the way that will best conserve their strength and numbers. So must a man plan his campaign of life.

No man has a right, either for himself or for others, to be at work in a factory, or a store, or anywhere else, unless he would work there from choice—money or no money—if he had the necessities of life.

“As a man thinks, so he is,” says the writer of Proverbs; but as a man adjusts himself, so really is he, after all. One great trouble with many individuals is that they are made up of all sorts of machinery that is not adjusted, that is out of place—no belts on the wheels, no fire under the boiler, hence no steam to move the mechanism.

Some folk never take the trouble to size themselves up—to find out what they are fitted to do—and then wonder why they remain way down at the bottom of the heap. I remember a young woman who told me that she did not believe she could ever be of any particular use in the world. I mentioned a dozen things that she ought to be able to do.

“If you only knew yourself,” I said, “you would set yourself to writing. You ought to be an author.”

She shook her head and smiled, as if she thought I was making fun of her. Later, force of circumstances drove her to take up the pen. And when she came to me and told me that she was making three thousand dollars a year in literary work, and was soon to go higher, I thought back to the time when she was a poor girl making three dollars a week when she failed accurately to estimate herself.

Our Greatest Wealth-Building Tools Reside Within Us
By Sharon Michaels
How To Prosper In Hard Times is filled with time-tested wealth and prosperity building principles from some of the greatest motivational writers of all times. Authors include Napoleon Hill, George S. Clason, James Allen and others who have given us classic books on the subject of wealth building.

The subtitle says it all, Blueprints for Abundance by the Greatest Motivational Teachers of All Time. There couldn't be a better time in our recent economic history to release a more powerful compilation of wisdom on the subject of wealth building.

There is an underlying theme from all eight featured authors - thought and belief can either create your wealth or destroy your life. We have choices and it is the quality of the choices that creates our destiny. All the authors believe that affirming and visualizing abundance and prosperity were vital to achieving true wealth. Our greatest wealth-building tools reside deep within us - within our mind, heart and spirit of belief in a higher power.

I do have to tell you that these early writers mention The Devine, God and Higher Purpose in their writings. Some even quote the Bible. If this language or belief system offends you, then this book may not be for you. The language can be archaic at times and very gender specific. Read past that and gather the pearls of wisdom from each author - there is a powerful reason their writings have endured for all these decades.

Here is one of my favorites:

Joseph Murphy - Best known for his book, The Power of the Subconscious Mind writing about How To Attract Money

"Take this little phrase; repeat it slowly four or five minutes three or four times a day quietly to yourself; Money is forever circulating freely in my life, and there is always a Devine surplus."

Here is a book from authors whose works are as powerful today as when they were first written. How To Prosper In Hard Times is reading for financial mind and soul. There is true abundance and wealth wisdom between these 255 pages.

Prospering Now
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca
The book teaches the most important step an
entrepreneur can take. This step is to over-deliver
on customer expectations and to do so for less money.
This is the not-so-well known aspect of successful retailing.
Next, grow a fat purse via savings. Remember your
economics which teaches that Savings = Investment.

Gratifications should be few in number to enhance savings.
Go light on life's difficulties so that you can carry
as little emotional baggage as possible. Money begets money
so put each coin to labor.

This book would be a good acquisition for a budding retailer
or entrepreneur looking to deliver value to the customer.

Got uke? If so, you need this book
By J. Abbott
I confess to being guilty of owning all of Jim's books. If I give one away, I quickly replace it. This one won't fit in your ukulele case (even if it's a baritone), but it is the "one to have". I'm not going to perform an audit to see what is in this book that is not in other books, but there appears to be a ton of new stuff. Missing are chord solo arrangements that you can find sprinkled throughout other books, and the intro/first verse to some songs (that most of us have never heard the intro to). (e.g. Mele Kalikimaka) This book does not include the more difficult type of material that is presented in Jim's master series books. At the back of the book is a nice small collection of holiday and celebration songs, and another section of children's songs. Amazon's price is the lowest that I have seen; so get one quick and consider holiday gift purchases.

I'll be taking mine to Kinko's to see if they can pop a clear plastic front and back cover in the comb binding because this book is going to see some serious use.

PS: In case you're wondering: the all-important "Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Pa-Pa-Ya (And She Loves to Give it Away)" is included. ;-) Also, much of the book is copyright protected material; so the price is a bargain.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK!!!!
By Emoretta Yang
I just purchased a Kindle version of The Daily Ukulele as a Christmas gift for my sister. MISTAKE! I'm a fan of the Beloffs and have several of their books, so this absolutely isn't a criticism of them or the contents of the book. The reviews posted on Amazon and the recommendations of fellow ukulele-players persuaded me to get this book for my sis. And the "idea" of being able to tote your uke music on a Kindle was appealing. But my sister, who accepted the gift, has told me that the book is essentially unreadable on the Kindle. As this is a book of sheet music, changing the text size apparently does not work, and anyway, at the least, you really want to be able to see the whole page. According to my sister, apparently the current version displays only two lines of a song at a time. I wish, I wish, I WISH SOMEONE had had the sense NOT to make this available on Kindle -- nice idea in principle maybe, but completely impractical in the execution. I would have bought the paper edition. It would be nice if Amazon would credit back what I paid for this useless version and apply it to buying a paper edition. Why are situations like this always excused by "BUYER BEWARE"? Why is it always the buyer's fault? Thanks for the forum for sounding off.

Addendum: I still don't advise buying the Kindle version, but Amazon has kindly allowed an inhouse credit so that i could buy the paper version to send to ole Sis. Thank you, Amazon.

fantastic!

I'm a ukulele beginner. I got my copy yesterday and I didn't put my uke down for three hours! Lots and lots of fun. With the chord charts included for each song, it's easy for the beginner to use. With 365 songs, I would expect every ukulele player to find plenty to like.

Slow Sex: The Art and Craft of the Female Orgasm, by Nicole Daedone

The truth is: Most women do not have satisfying sex lives. SLOW SEX can change that.

Better sex is about one thing: better orgasm. This life-altering guide teaches men and women how to use the practice of Orgasmic Meditation-or OM-to slow down, connect emotionally, and achieve authentic female sexual satisfaction. The promise: In just fifteen minutes every woman can become orgasmic. And, with the right partner and the right technique, that orgasm could last and last!

For more than a decade, Nicole Daedone has been leading the "slow sex movement," which is devoted to the art and craft of the female orgasm. OM is the act of slowing down, tuning in, and experiencing a deeper spiritual and physical connection during sex. SLOW SEX reveals the philosophy and techniques of OM and includes a step-by-step, ten-day OM starter program, as well as OM secrets for achieving ultimate satisfaction. It also includes exercises to help enhance readers' "regular" sex lives, such as Slow Oral for Her, Slow Oral for Him, and Slow Intercourse.

This book is the argument for daily intimacy, and for paying attention as the foundation of pleasure, all with a focus on the female experience.

This practice was recommended to me by a mentor whom I trust
By Shivani Grail
This practice was recommended to me by a mentor whom I trust. I read the book and it was a WOW! I wanted to experience it. My husband read the book and agreed to give it a try to see. I was concerned about "What's in it for him?" Well apparently this is the booster rocked for personal growth and evolution. I never knew or appreciated the mystery and power of this space between my legs, hidden and rarely consulted. I'm learning how much beauty and power I have as a woman and that I'm the Source of this for my man. Pretty transformative.
We have taken the "How to Om" class and are enrolled to take the Relationship by Design course. Realized we have not deliberately Designed our relationship but have just responded as best we can as the situations of life arose. To be consciously co creating with a blueprint that satisfies both of us - another WOW!!! The Power of Orgasm is transforming Us, more Intimacy, More Connection, More Love!
Thank you Nicole Daedone

The Path of Philosophy: Truth, Wonder, and Distress, by John Marmysz

The Path of Philosophy introduces you to the study of philosophy through a compelling narrative in which the world's most important philosophers appear as characters. The text traces the history of western philosophy from its beginnings in ancient Greece to contemporary developments in the modern world. Threads running through the text demonstrate how philosophy is unique and distinct from religion and science, while at the same time showing how all three disciplines are interrelated. Exceptionally well written, and unusual in its cohesiveness, the text leaves you with a vivid picture of philosophy as a unique and spiritually important field of study.

Review
"The following features of this textbook are desirable, innovative, and vital to higher learning. The fact that each chapter begins with guiding questions is innovative and coincides with a learning-centered emphasis, viz., critical thinking and evaluative thinking. Also, that the textbook makes connections between philosophy and contemporary events is essential to the ongoing development of higher learning and for the academic survival of the humanities" -- John Wesley Holder III, Pensacola Junior College

"I admire the author for approaching philosophy in a new and intriguing way. His prose style is simple, elegant and precise." -- Dr. Charles Fethe, Kean University of New Jersey

"The discussion of Wondrous Distress in Existentialism is grand." -- Michael McClure, Prince George's Community College

"It is clear that the author has a passion for philosophy and probably for teaching as well." -- John F. Millard, Boston College

An excellent book written by a great author and teacher
By Nick K
In his book "The Path of Philosophy: Truth, Wonder, and Distress," author John Marmysz skillfully chronicles the history of western philosophy spanning from the presocratic era, all the way up through the existential philosophy of Kierkergaard, Nietzsche and Sartre during the 19th and 20th centuries. Despite covering a time period of philosophical history that would typically fill up entire volumes of books, Marmysz is able to craft an account that is condensed enough to be palatable, but without sacrificing important and relevant details and analysis. The book is rich in information to the extent that nearly every single paragraph, sentence and word is relevant and necessary, a quality that is not that common in very many books on philosophy.

As much as it is informative, "The Path of Philosophy" is equally engaging as well, due mainly in part to the quality of Marmysz's writing, as well as the personality which he evokes through his writing. It is clear he has a strong passion for philosophy, something I can attest to as a student of his at college when I read this last spring. Perhaps the most appealing part of Marmysz as a writer and a teacher is his profound ability to humbly present a narrative that provokes the reader to transcend the material in order to gain a more evocative insight. Most importantly, Marmysz ascribes the philosophical perspective, not through the specific details of his writing, but rather through the inherent analysis and interpretation that the reader devises upon reading it, a quality that is difficult to accomplish to the extent which it occurs in "The Path of Philosophy".

Excellent Chronological Introduction to Western Philosophy
By Edward McAuley
"The Path of Philosophy: Truth, Wonder, and Distress" is a remarkable introductory commentary on Western Philosophy. It presents a rich and well represented understanding of Western Philosophy in a manner that is well considered, well constructed and well written, by an author who remains true to the conflicts of philosophy, leaving them to the reader to draw his or her own conclusions. The author does this in a straight forward, easy to digest format that is a pleasure to read.

This book provides one with entree into the modern philosophical scene by giving historical chronology and description of the philosophers and philosophies that have provided the foundations for current thought. This prepares one to understand everything from why we think the way we do, to the foundation of governments and the forces involved in shaping their political makeup, to current day approaches to science and psychology.

With this book, one comes to understand that Western Philosophy is like a lush, diverse and complex river system with many tributaries, plants and wildlife, each worthy of study for the sake of its own uniqueness and all feeding off of philosophy's nourishing waters. We find that philosophy is the primary, intellectual life-giving system of Western Culture and that it is at the center of our everyday lives, whether we know it or not. One begins to see how philosophy feeds education, literature, science, business, psychology and even how it feeds film and media. One comes to understand that it is philosophy that initiates the greatest questions available to society itself and one comes to see how philosophy nourishes the very essence of intellectual life in Western Culture.

As a result of reading "The Path of Philosophy: Truth, Wonder, and Distress," you'll find that the reward of understanding Western Philosophy is that one comes to understand oneself and one's environment in a much more comprehensive and complete manner. The answers you seek in life will likely be found in the questions and considerations philosophy poses and you will be much better prepared for life with this understanding.

In his "The Path of Philosophy: Truth, Wonder, and Distress," Doctor John Marmysz proves to be an excellent guide to this long, deep and lush ecosystem we call Western Philosophy. His book is unpretentious and practical and it offers great insight to those adventurers who make the journey along the lengths of this great river. It provides references throughout the text, as jumping off points from which one may study the works of the philosophers being discussed in greater detail. It also offers a solid foundation to those who are willing to continue on to define the questions along the new pathways this mighty river will cut.

Will you make that journey?

The Prodigal Church: A Gentle Manifesto against the Status Quo, by Jared C. Wilson

This book is not a tired rant.
This book is not a reactionary diatribe.
This book is a gentle manifesto against the status quo.

In The Prodigal Church, Jared Wilson challenges church leaders to reconsider their priorities when it comes to how they “do church” and reach people in their communities, arguing that we too often rely on loud music, flashy lights, and skinny jeans to get people in the door.

Writing with the grace and kindness of a trusted friend, Wilson encourages readers to reexamine the Bible’s teaching, not simply return to a traditional model for tradition’s sake. He then sets forth an alternative to both the attractional and the traditional models: an explicitly biblical approach that is gospel focused, grace based, and fruit oriented.

Review

“Jared Wilson provides a stern warning against the excesses of pragmatic approaches to church growth while reminding us that if the power of the gospel is not driving our ministries, we may build a crowd, but we are not building a church.”
—Thom S. Rainer, President and CEO, LifeWay Christian Resources

“Jared Wilson paints a vivid picture of the grievous outcome of church centered on programmatic pragmatism instead of the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. His critical analysis and probing confrontation, coupled with his personal encounter with grace, has the potential to bring the church to her senses and usher her back to our Father’s restorative embrace. The Prodigal Church is a desperately needed wake-up call.”
—Jeff Vanderstelt, Visionary Leader, Soma; Pastor, Doxa Church, Bellevue, Washington; author, Saturate

“The Prodigal Church is indeed a gentle manifesto against the status quo. Wilson writes with humility, urgency, and true pastoral concern for God’s people. He pushes back against the consumerism and pragmatism so prevalent in twenty-first-century congregations, and points the church to something far superior—the gospel of Jesus Christ. All who love the local church will benefit from reading this book.”
—Jason K. Allen, President, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and College

“Jared Wilson writes that we’ve forgotten “who the church is for.” He rightly, and with a kind spirit, questions the status quo in this book. The church is not a consumer experience. It’s not supposed to be a volunteer-draining, CEO-driven business. No, it’s much bigger, better, and more beautiful than that.”
—Brant Hansen, CURE International; storyteller; radio host; author, Unoffendable

“Although I don’t agree with all of the conclusions Jared comes to, he asks penetrating questions and lovingly argues as a man who deeply loves Jesus, the gospel, the church, and pastors. I am fully confident that what he has written here will save some weary pastors from burning out and will make The Village Church a healthier place.”
—Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor, The Village Church, Dallas, Texas; President, Acts 29 Church Planting Network; author, The Mingling of Souls

By Tim Challies
John MacArthur’s book Ashamed of the Gospel changed my life. Literally. At the time I found it on the shelves of a local Christian book store I was attending a church that was committed to many of the principles of church growth. Though MacArthur had never attended that church, he understood it, he described it, he critiqued it. Best of all, he opened up God’s Word and showed something much, much better. I soon found that I had to move on. I had to find a church that cared less about pragmatism and far more about the gospel. And, by God’s grace, I did.

Jared Wilson was once also caught up in the church growth movement. Like me he was reading the books, attending the conferences, measuring the statistics, and trying desperately to generate a great work at his church. And he was feeling that same restlessness, that same sense that this just wasn’t right, that this couldn’t possibly be what church was meant to be.

While the church growth movement has slowed and evolved in recent years, many of its principles remain foundational within evangelical churches. Many churches still hold to an attractional model by which they measure the success of any element of the service or any program by its ability to attract unbelievers. It is “a way of ministry that derives from the primary purpose of making Christianity appealing.” In The Prodigal Church, Wilson offers what he calls “a gentle manifesto against the status quo”—against that way of thinking of the church. This is not just another rant from someone convinced he knows a better way. It is not another diatribe. Rather, it is a manifesto. It stems from Wilson’s own experience, heads straight to Scripture, and seeks God’s wisdom.

"You and I are sitting down for coffee. Or a long breakfast, since this is a book, not a pamphlet. I ask you, as a friend, to hear me out. I have some concerns about the way you’re doing church. You’re on guard, because you’re tired of rants, tired of legalistic whining, tired of reactionary diatribes. You just want to get on with God’s mission. I want that too. But for this long breakfast, I ask you to put the guard down and let me speak to you as a friend. As one iron sharpening another."

There are several elements in The Prodigal Church that I found especially appealing. The first is the deep focus on Scripture. Wilson’s personal reformation, where he came to see such deep concerns with the attractional model of church, began with personal tragedy that drove him to see the Bible in entirely new ways. The Bible transformed him from within, allowing him to understand the utter centrality of the gospel (rather than programs) in the church. So while he does critique the seeker-friendly or attractional model, he does so by opening his Bible and showing where it falls short.

Also, Wilson is a very capable writer and applies humor in appropriate ways and appropriate places. He often pokes fun at himself, showing himself as the one who was ignoring such basic wisdom and buying into such trite programs. He is equally vulnerable, telling his own life’s story as an important part of the backdrop to his growing awareness of what the Bible says about church. In this way he continues to show that he is writing a book that is for himself first and the rest of us later—often a marker of the best kind of book.

Because this book is not a diatribe but actually offers rich and compelling answers, I was challenged by it. My church is not often tempted toward the attractional model, but we may be tempted to swing the pendulum too far to the opposite extreme. Wilson offered gentle critique to us, too, and I appreciated the challenge. He affirmed what we are doing well, but also gently critiqued those areas where we have grown tired or complacent.

I noticed that Matt Chandler’s endorsement for Wilson’s work begins like this: “Although I don’t agree with all of the conclusions Jared comes to…” And I doubt many people will agree with all of his conclusions. But I think any wise pastor can learn with him. Any discerning pastor can benefit from asking the same questions, even if he arrives at different answers. And it is not only pastors who will benefit. After all, we are all members of churches and all responsible to ensure that we are members of good churches that are going about God’s work in God’s way. There is wisdom in this book for all of us, and for that reason I gladly commend it to every Christian to read and consider.

Wilson focuses on Christ and shows the importance that no matter what a church looks like or what approach to ministry they take
By Amazon Customer
Everywhere you look there seems to be another book being released talking about the problems with the church. Whether specific doctrinal issues, styles of worship, types of bread used during communion, etc. There seems to be more and more books on how everyone is doing things wrong. With that being said, Jared Wilson has written a book, The Prodigal Church, that takes an indepth look at two styles/approaches to church and while diving into the argument and differences between a traditional approach and a attractional/seeker approach to show a third way of doing church. Throughout the whole discussion, Wilson focuses on Christ and shows the importance that no matter what a church looks like or what approach to ministry they take, Christ must be the center of everything they are and they do. But with that in mind Wilson writes this book to bring attention that how we are doing ministry is important too. “How we ‘do church’ shapes the way people see God and his Son and his ways in the world” (Kindle Loc. 205).

Throughout The Prodigal Church, Wilson looks closely at the attractional church model and shows that while many large/mega churches today have been “successful” through this model the data and stories show that their success hasn’t really done what they set out to do. The goal of most seeker churches is to reach the lost, and the data has shown that they have not done this but have grown through church transfers mostly. And through this they have attracted people mostly with a show and Wilson reminds that what a church attracts someone with is what they must keep them with. If it is through an attraction or event or program, they will eventually get bored with that or will see a better show in town and move towards that. Wilson keeps bringing the point back to the gospel and how it must be the focus and the center of all that a church does.

Can a large/mega church be make disciples that are making disciples? Absolutely! But this typically is not what is happening in larger churches. Metrics and measurements usually start and stop at ‘how many.’ How many attended? How many came forward? How many raised their hands? A church cannot stop at sheer numbers because numbers don’t tell the whole story. Numbers don’t show growth and maturity in Christ. This is harder to measure but it is important that a church is making disciples to be like Christ and moving them to make disciples in their neighborhoods and cities. The attractional church often puts most or all their focus on just attendance numbers and “how many” numbers. How many participate in ministries can’t show what matters. Wilson says, “It’s possible to mistake the appreance of success for faithfulness and fruitfulness” (Loc. 591). Wilson throughout this whole book helps to show the importance of not just gathering a crowd but making disciples.

As I said to start that there has been much written on this topic of how to do church better or reach the next generation. Most of what is out there misses that it begins with and always ends with Christ and following his command to make disciples. All that a church is doing must focus around this. Wilson begins and ends here in The Prodigal Church. I would highly recommend this book to all pastors and ministry leaders to start and encourage discussions together as staff and/or elders about the mission and purpose of your church and how you are making disciples that are making disciples in your church.

Gospel Balm for Refugees of the Church Growth Movement
By Erik Raymond
(This is a longer review as it was posted on The Gospel Coalition)

Like many people, I enjoy documentaries. Producers spend significant amounts of time investigating a topic, analyzing it, interpreting it, and then providing a way forward. The best documentaries are those that help you better understand—even feel—the tension in and burden for the subject. In his latest book The Prodigal Church: A Gentle Manifesto Against the Status Quo, Jared C. Wilson gives us something of a documentary on the contemporary evangelical church, particularly those who carry the enduring scent of the church-growth movement by means of attractional ministry.

Gracious Diagnostic for Churches

Wilson, director of content strategy for Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and managing editor of For the Church, is not an outsider to this topic. Serving as a pastor for a number of years in churches thoroughly committed to the newest and seemingly best ways to do church, he has what you may call “pew-cred” when discussing the attractional church. In The Prodigal Church he simply asks Christians, particularly pastors and church leaders, to reexamine what we do and why we do it. In this way, the manifesto is something of a diagnostic for churches that provides a simple, clear, and actionable plan for biblical reform.

In the introduction, Wilson works hard to ensure he’s not unduly offending anyone. With a title that has the word “manifesto” and this much apology in the opening, I was prepared for a scrappy book with a lot of ecclesiastical “elbows” being thrown. This is not the case. The Prodigal Church is well researched, gracious, pastoral, and pleasantly serene. The only people this book would irritate are those who would say, “Don’t confuse me with the facts; I know what I believe.” Even those who might disagree with Wilson should find the tone courteous, the critique fair, and the action plan biblical.

Pragmatism and Consumerism

In this manifesto, Wilson makes an observation about what has become mainstream within evangelicalism. It was formerly referred to as the church growth movement and now is broadly grouped in the category of the attractional church. This ministry sees itself with the priority of reaching people. This of course is not bad. In fact, it’s to be applauded. However, the observation is that too many churches have the wrong reference point when doing ministry. Instead of starting with what would appear to be the obvious question, “What does God’s Word say?” many innovative, attractional churches start by asking, “What works?”

Wilson concedes that the Bible is somewhat vague about exactly how to “do church.” But he also observes that just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. He notes:

I think the evangelical church in the West is particularly susceptible to two primary ideologies that drive many of its ways of doing church today, and I think the attractional model is fundamentally built on these functional ideologies. These ideologies are pragmatism and consumerism. (47)

Pragmatism, says Wilson, isn’t the same thing as being practical. It’s about doing what works: ”Pragmatism has a utilitarian ethos to it. It is by nature unspiritual. It has no room for discernment in it . . . (and) it has essentially become the water that evangelical ministry swims in” (48).

Ministry is oriented around what seems to work. How do we know what works? Walking through some of the philosophies of leading church growth experts, Wilson demonstrates that much of this ministry is built on the business practices of corporate America. If the customer is the guy not yet in the pew and the customer is always right, then it’s not hard to see that in the attractional church the proverbial tail is wagging the dog.

Asking the Important Questions

In a bustling, busy evangelical church committed to “reaching people,” it’s tough to see through the dust of activity and ask the important questions. If you do ask them, people might think you’re strangely opposed to the church’s mission. Wilson, having himself breathed in the dust storm of attractional activity, perceptively poses a couple: “What if the customer isn’t actually right?” and “What if it’s not actually working?”

Wilson culls from numerous studies on trends in evangelicalism to demonstrate that what many think is so successful is actually mythical:

It turns out that while megachurches are flourishing, America has suffered an actual net loss of churchgoers since the rise of the seeker/attractional movement.

This means that the seeker/attractional movement has not succeeded. It meant to get lost persons in the doors and make them “fully devoted followers of Christ,” and in the fifteen years or so of their model’s predominance, American churches are actually less full across the board.

So who’s filling all these churches? Every week, some of the attractional leaders post growing numbers of baptisms and “decisions.” What can we conclude? As the research shows, by and large the people filling these church buildings week in and week out turn out to be other Christians. Often they are de-churched Christians or disaffected Christians or disillusioned Christians, but the idea that the attractional church is having its doors beaten down by lost people is a myth. (35)

Instead of conversion growth we see transfer growth. Perhaps, to use Wilson’s paradigm, it’s consumer growth.

Prescribing the Path Ahead

At this point we may mistakenly take The Prodigal Church as something of a jeremiad against the church. But after pointing out the cracks in the attractional church’s foundation, Wilson prescribes a path ahead. This path is neither novel nor innovative; it is the simple yet powerfully proven path of Scripture and church history. In this explanation, he makes an important observation many need to hear: “You can’t program discipleship because Christianity is supernatural.”

Here he cautions churches away from the “church-in-a-box,” “just add water” approach to ministry, showing that it’s far more complex, messy, and “New Testamenty” than that. Recalling firsthand stories of seeing the gospel bloom in unsuspecting soil, Wilson reminds us that God causes the growth. He points us back to the powerful gospel, the sufficient Word, the beauty of the church gathered, and the testimony of true gospel community. It’s so simple that it’s refreshing and liberating. I was reminded that this is exactly what the gospel does—it liberates and refreshes.

Power of God’s Grace

In the final chapter Wilson hops into the documentary and shares a very personal story. He talks about how he was enslaved to sin and almost destroyed his marriage and family. Through a number of very painful years he came to a place of utter desperation. It was then and there that the truth and beauty of the gospel became clear. Truly knowing he was accepted before God changed everything. He was actually loved. In the depths of the slough of despond Wilson realized his greatest need was the good news:

When my own life fell apart, I had a notebook full of sermon outlines overflowing with helpful tips and practical steps for becoming more victorious, happy, and successful. Not a single one worked. Only the grace of God was powerful enough to save me. I urge you not to deny your people their only help. They are inwardly (and some outwardly) crying out for help, for rescue, for redemption, for salvation. Don’t throw them the anchor of the law. Only the gospel works. (217)

If our goal is to truly glorify God by “helping” people, then we need to hear Wilson’s gentle manifesto. The Prodigal Church calls us back to the whiteboard to ask, “What does the Bible say we are supposed to be doing again?”

This is the work of a friend who cares.

It is the best cooking book I've bought. The picture of the salad on the book cover took my heart and I decided to buy it even if the salad was the only good dish in the book. But I am lucky for ownning this book.I made some of the dishes in the book and all of them were delicious .The book is the result of the writer's experience as mother and a chef. The essential engrediants of the recipes were explained to make it easy for those who like lebanese food and haven't tried cooking it before.

Beautiful book. Lovely pictures through out the book. US customers need to know that this book is printed in the UK, therefore the measuring system is different but not too difficulty to figure out the conversion. Some recipes may contain long list of ingredients, but most of those ingredients you can find in most grocery stores across the US and middle eastern stores. Can't wait to make my first batch of the ma'maoul cookies with pistachios and date. Yum.
