I'm having real trouble I've re wrote my review three time so not to offend the author and his family, yet the fact is this book is stuck in the 70's.
Nothing in this book is advanced including even the nunchaku he is using.The last 40 years we have used steel with interlocking links so we can meet state and federal law when transporting by seperation and locking them away. Steel because like a modern sports car compared to a model T is faster and more deadly while making your skill level standards much higher.He has done what so many grandmothers do, given only part of the recipe. I guess its time to write that book.

An excellent book for beginners and intermediate students.

Even though this volume also shows some very basic Nunchaku techniques; nevertheless, it is strongly recommended to first read and study Demura's first book (Nunchaku: Karate Weapon of Self-Defense)on this weapon. Like many martial artists, for a while many years ago I was fasinated with the Nunchaku. However, in spite of its flashy and sometimes effective techniques, I realized the limitations of this tool for self-defense. This volume covers several different methods to grasp the Nunchaku, various swinging and striking techniques, how to change grips, double flips, combinations and how to use the double Nunchaku. It also has a Nunchaku kata.

In conclusion, if you desire to master this weapon, you will want this volume in your personal library.

Basic instruction guide...

It was a bit basic but it did provide a good foundation for swinging the 'chucks. The photos are a bit confusing at times, but I've been able to figure them all out eventually. What I find lacking is the philosophy behind the nunchaku movements; in other words, why do we do such things or why do we decide to go in this direction? Understanding the philosophy to the art will help users develop their own techniques and styles...

About the Author
Nigel Goldenfeld is Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (U.K.) in 1982, and for the years 1982-1985 was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California at Santa Barbara. He is a University Scholar of the University of Illinois, a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a recipient of the Xerox Award for research, a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance, and was an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow from 1987-1991. David Pines is research professor of physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has made pioneering contributions to an understanding of many-body problems in condensed matter and nuclear physics, and to theoretical astrophysics. editor of Perseus’ Frontiers in Physics series and former editor of American Physical Society’s Reviews of Modern Physics, Dr. Pines is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, a foreign member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Pines has received a number of awards, including the Eugene Feenberg Memorial Medal for Contributions to Many-Body Theory; the P.A.M. Dirac Silver Medal for the Advancement of Theoretical Physics; and the Friemann Prize in Condensed Matter Physics.

This is an excellent textbook for anyone who wants to learn how phase transition happens and the renormalization group. I think this will be the best introductory book if you want to learn about RG in the statistical mechanics context.

A wonderful introduction to critical phenomena

This book stands clearly to me as the best one on the vast and fascinating subject of phase transitions, critical phenomena and the renormalization group. My other references are Binney et al., Le Bellac and Yeomans. Nigel Goldenfeld's course is the most suitable for a first contact with the field. It stresses in a exceptional way the ideas lying under each concept and has a gift for explaining what's really going on beyond the equations. This can most clearly be seen with his careful discussion of ergodicity and symmetry breaking.

Moreover, this book is remarkable in that it presents various openings on modern issues ; it includes an overview of disordered systems and a rather complete discussion of dynamical critical phenomena.

After reading this book, you'll probably be ready to fully appreciate the typical treaties on critical phenomena, which use more sharp technical tools but which require a good understanding of the associated physics you'll only find so beautifully presented in Nigel Goldenfeld's book.

Elegantly crafted, well-written, and (for a book on statistical physics) very readable

Nigel Goldenfeld's book, "Lectures on Phase Transitions and the Renormalization Group" is clear, lucid, and very well-written. One of the most challenging things in writing such a book (I won't call it a text; but it serves well for that purpose) is in helping the reader to gain conceptual insight into the subjects, and not to simply to present a series of equations. In this, Dr. Goldenfeld succeeds admirably.

Topics that Goldenfeld discusses (most significantly; the renormalization group concept and critical phenomena) are presented in a very clear and accessible manner. In fact, his book is so useful that I have adopted his reference as my own "standard nomenclature," and have translated my previously-used notation (and also studied in such classic's as Hill's "Statistical Mechanics") to agree with Goldenfeld's.

One of the aspects that I am particularly enjoying is the care with which Goldenfeld builds the underlying logic and arguments as he approaches key points. This is very well-done, and makes this book a solid "go-to" reference in developing a well-grounded understanding of emerging yet very important topics.

It's kind of a strange book.

I took it out through my library as an e-book, and it's not what I thought it would be. There was no description of the book available, so I thought it was going to be entirely about the Lance Armstrong doping scandal. It's much more wide ranging than that, and I would have known that if I could have read the description of the book on amazon. I struggled with what rating to give it, because it's not like it's poorly written or anything, but there's a lot about Sudan, cancer, things I didn't expect. So, I think a 3 star rating is appropriate.

"Breaking Bad" is a quick engaging read written by an author not known as an expert on the sport of cycling. It provides a perspective the more casual fan can relate to. It does not try to delve deeply into the world of professional cycling during the Armstrong era. It does provide the reader with a glimpse of how methodical Armstrong's assault on the rules and fairness of the sport where.

This was a great read, especially after reading Tyler Hamilton's book and David Millar's book about doping in cycling. It sort of points out the natural allure for professional athletes to seek out anything that gives them an advantage.

Chartreux are amazing, intelligent & loving cats

I was hoping to find out more, specifically about the breed, since I have owned one, and am getting a rescue male, as well as a kitten in the spring. There is lots of info, but most of it can be found on the web. There is also lots of non breed specific info on cats, some of which I never knew.
I have owned several cats, dogs & birds. I worked as a veterinary assistant during my high school days, and been around animals for practically my whole life. Chartreux are amazing, intelligent & loving cats. Very devoted to their owners. You won't go wrong with this breed if you are considering one. Just be sure to get quality blood lines.

Six hundred and twenty thousand men died in the Civil War - the United States¿ bloodiest single conflict which transformed a troubled slaveholding republic into the world¿s most advanced capitalist democracy. Civil War America is a compelling history of the origins of the Civil War as well as the events which brought about the destruction of the southern Confederacy, the triumph of the Union and the emancipation of four million black slaves. It also probes the impressive material development and westward expansion of the United States - grand national achievements which came at significant cost not only to many ordinary Americans but also to the indigenous inhabitants of the land, the Plains Indians.
