Needs Proper Editing

The storyline was simplistic and sweet, but the numerous grammatical errors made it impossible for me to complete reading the book. I would suggest an editor who has a firm grasp on the English language provide proper editing services, and the author then re-release the book. At this point I would not recommend this book.

Wonderful story. Love the characters. Lots of drama. This is a story of a young woman in search of rebuilding her life after an accident that hurt her not only physically but emotionally. A trip to California changes her life. Read to find out how. Sad to say it still needs editing.

A must to read for graduate students and all researchers.

Wonderful book! This one with How to write a lot by Paul Silvia are a must. I am a 20 years researchers in the academic and Murray's book gave me tools that I was dreaming of. I applied immediately the Brown's question on a paper I was writing with one of my PhD student and the abstract came out as a breeze. Then I adapt the Murray's 10 questions to a grant I was writing and in no time, I had a pretty good draft. I never thought we could write to the journal editor; I did and doing so, I spared precious time - knowing in advance that the article I was writing was not corresponding to the journal I had in mind. Thanks Rowena Murray.

Richard R. Brooks is an associate professor in the Holcombe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University. His research has been sponsored by both government and industry, including the U.S. Office of Naval Research, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Science Foundation, and BMW Manufacturing Co. He received a Ph.D. in computer science from Louisiana State University.

84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record of bibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20 years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrained London bookseller carried on an increasingly touching correspondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanff encloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, a correspondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works by Hazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separate cover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll ever conquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949, Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off to augment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only when FPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real fun begin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. has dared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limp singles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a real Pepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they want fresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. Soon they're sharing news of Frank's family and Hanff's career. No doubt their letters would have continued, but in 1969, the firm's secretary informed her that Frank Doel had died. In the collection's penultimate entry, Helene Hanff urges a tourist friend, "If you happen to pass by 84, Charing Cross Road, kiss it for me. I owe it so much."

Reading Another Person's Mail Was Never So Delightful

Helene Hanff was a New York writer and Frank Doel was a London bookseller. This book chronicles the letters they wrote over a period of many years to one another. Although they never met, they became true friends bonded by their love of literature.
Having read this tiny little gem, I can tell you that I'm not even sure why I liked it so much. Maybe it was because I loved seeing a warm friendship develop between two total strangers. Maybe it was because I loved the dry wit of Helene and the staunch Britishness of Frank. Maybe it was because I liked hearing about the WWII years, how the people of Britain sacrificed, and how one caring American woman made a difference to this small group of Britishers.
One note: this is the only book I have ever read that is truly enhanced by the video. Read the book, then rent the movie. Anne Bancroft is the perfect Helene and Anthony Hopkins is brilliant as Frank.

A Joy to Treasure

I waited too long to finally read 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and I have no reasonable excuse for it. Someone had lent me a copy and it was the only book in my backpack on the commute to work one morning as I had forgotten to bring the book I was reading, so I started it and had one of the best journeys of my life. I immediately ran out and bought my own copy as I knew that I would read this book over and over again. It is very funny and, in the end, quite touching in ways that all readers will understand and appreciate. The best endorsement of this book is that it will get one to investigate all sorts of old classics and look at reading and writing in new and different ways. I personally will be letting used books fall open just to see what interested a reader from the past and what he or she is trying to tell me. I little trick gratefully picked up from the delightful Helene Hanff.

Beautiful, with a heart-rending and tragic moral

This is the story of an American writer (the author of the book) who strikes up a friendship by mail with a bookseller in England. The entire book is a series of unedited and un-commented-on letters exchanged between Hanff and the Marks & Co. booksellers at 84 Charing Cross Road. Her primary pen pal is a man named Frank Doel, with whom she shares a love of old books. [Perhaps this is the point where I should say that I flatly disagree, without reservation, with the previous reviewers who believe there was a potential romantic attachment between the two of them.]
The correspondence runs from 1949 until 1969, during which time Helene and the people at 84 Charing Cross Road exchange Christmas gifts and news of their families, but never meet. This is a beautiful book, which can be read in 45 minutes. I suppose every reader will take his or her own lessons from the book, but here is mine: If there is something you really want to do in your life, then DO IT when the opportunity arises. Time is finite. If you keep saying, "Maybe next year," there will eventually come a time when there IS no next year. It is a painful tragedy that Helene Hanff never got to England to meet Frank Doer and the other people at Marks & Company, and that poignant sadness is what stayed with me after I had closed the book.

I have to say that I was greatly supprised at how this series it turning out. I did not see the current situation comming and am enjoying the twist. I am looking forward to next addition as I can't wait to see what will happen next.

Great addition to the series!

Wow, Ms. Flynn is a queen of plot twists I don't see coming. I've been with this series since the beginning and they've built beautifully on each other, and that's a sign of an author doing it right. Not only is this book hot, but it's well written. I know not everyone loves first person, but when it's done right like this, it's great.

Sampson is an Omega, and like a lot of other Omegas he's been horribly abused. Seeing him learn to trust and love was great. His men are patient, sweet, make mistakes and own up to them and just all around awesome. Add in getting to reconnect with a lot of other characters I'd come to love just made this book better.

The sex is hot, there is an awesome sub plot and they're on a tropical island. I don't think there is anything about this book I didn't love. Just the right amount of story so I could escape everyday life for a bit and that's why I read to escape reality, so this was perfect!

About the Author
I worked as a programmer for a major insurance company. In 1976 I aided in the introduction of TSO to the staff by testing it, creating a TSO user’s guide, writing Clists, teaching classes in TSO, and making recommendations to the technical support personnel about TSO. I worked on TSO administration, managing user id’s. I automated the administration by writing Clists, TSO native mode commands, utilities, JCL, Assembler language programs, and MVS utilities. At another major insurance company I was introduced to REXX on CMS, and there wrote a user guide for programmers on REXX. When TSO REXX became available in 1988, I began working with it. Several years of that led to the creation of my book “REXX in the TSO Environment.” As a programming contractor, I automated the transfer of an entire data center’s JCL and procedures to another data center, using REXX, IBM utilities, and TSO/ISPF panels. When the publisher decided to drop mainframe books in 1996, the book was no longer published. Shortly after that I created a course for TSO REXX, and began teaching it in various companies throughout the country, including at an IBM site. I turned the course into a book which I published and sold directly on one of my websites until 2004. When I became aware of On Demand publishing, I updated my book, converted it to electronic format and published it in 2012.

The ONLY reliable source

I have taught REXX programming for more than 15 years. I have taught it in several countries besides the USA. Gabe's book is the ONLY definitive resource for developing REXX prowess on you own, or after taking a class. His examples are great. I consider it a worthwhile investment in your IT career.

Knows his stuff!

Gargiulo explains how REXX works. No jargon. Clear language.
I had to maintain a few old REXX programs without any training. Not a smart situation.
I use this book every day on my job, and it has really helped me.
I couldn't figure out EXECIO on my own but the examples in the book really helped.
There's a web page with practice problems and solutions. I'll probably do one or two in my spare time. (Not much of that!)

Fantastic book

Much better than his first book.
I had "REXX in the TSO Environment" when it first came out. It was good,
but not always very clear.
This is better. A lot clearer. The long discussion of the STACK has been
shortened. It gives you all you need to know about the STACK and leaves
you with a warning about using it too much.
I like the part about Error Traps.

One of the strangest pilgrimages ever

If you're old enough, you may remember the "Chuckles Bites the Dust" episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show, where a rogue elephant in a circus parade mistook Chuckles the Clown for a huge peanut and "shelled" him to death. His comrades at the TV station were heartbroken by the tragedy, but also could hardly suppress their laughter. "Aftermirth" dealt with those same mixed emotions that come from bizarre, freakish accidents where people are killed.

In the story, narrator Michael Larssen, whose wife was killed when lightning struck her nickel-titanium underwire bra, withdraws completely from the world. Only when he meets Elena, whose father was killed in a freakish industrial accident, does he begin to live again. On one of the strangest pilgrimages ever, they meet others who have lost loved ones in bizarre accidents, and they learn the startling secret to moving on with their lives.

I enjoyed "Aftermirth" very much. The storyline was quite original, and the characters - even the dead ones - were painted vividly enough to be real people. Kudos to Ms. Jordan for a very intriguing and entertaining story.

Hillary Jordan demonstrates yet again how little you REALLY know her as a writer...."Aftermirth" is unexpected, irreverent and super-smart, finding both humor and human connection in that most bleak of topics: death. A fantastic and thought-provoking read, by one of the best (and clearly most versatile) literary voices out there!

Darwin Lives!

Alas, the sacrifices that some people make to take their genes out of the human gene pool. "Aftermath" tells the story not only of people who have contributed to their death by their own foolish actions but also of those who have met their ends through bizarre, albeit humorous, circumstances. While the story naturally has a morbid thread, its message goes well beyond death and bereavement. If anything, it shows that death can forge the beginning of new relationships - and, let's face it, that the means to the end can be pretty damn funny.

Nice simple layout and good selection of phrases, including some not in my other phrasebooks. Sadly, though, quite a few are wrong. For example, in the phrases "It's hot, isn't it?"and "Cold, isn't?" the words dingin and panas are reversed.

About the Author
Nick Freeman had intended to pursue a career in corporate law. However after being entered for and winning an advocacy competition, he took a job as a prosecutor for Greater Manchester Police in 1981. It was at that stage that he realised the huge benefit of knowing the law intricately to secure success in the courtroom - the precursor to his Mr Loophole technique. In 1983, he moved to a large firm of criminal lawyers in Manchester and was made a partner within six months. Although his work involved representing those facing serious criminal charges such as murder, fraud and rape, he established an unparalleled reputation for winning road traffic cases. At the age of 42 he left to go it alone and established his own law practice, Freeman and Co. His cases involving clients such as Katie Price, David Beckham and Colin Montgomerie are widely reported across the media. And he frequently appears on radio and television to offer comment on topical matters of the law.
