Finally, a book that tells the whole story
By Kasu Sista
As the CIO for a data analytics company, I have a finite budget and too many projects. It is always a struggle to decide on priorities and commit dollars and resources.
Dr. Kodukula's book goes a long way towards defining the terms (project, program and portfolio) and giving a practical methodology towards defining and managing a project portfolio. The funnel and filters portfolio model gives a new perspective on the project life cycle. The book is very well organized to lead a practitioner through the various stages of Designing, constructing, monitoring and controlling project portfolios. My PM's would be very glad for the guidance and the tools that the book provides.
From my perspective, section 3 is especially valuable. With constantly changing priorities, the tools provided here will help me and my team to prioritize and re-prioritize as needed. I use many financial management tools for managing various projects (technology or otherwise). Dr. Kodukula brings some of these tools to the portfolio level. I am sure I will be using many of these tools in my own financial models. The case study at the end of the book brings all the concepts together in a concrete example, which would be very helpful to project and portfolio managers alike.
Overall, the book is written with a clarity of purpose and style that is informative and practical. I highly recommend it.

Excellent tools and frameworks for implementing PPM practices
By Steve P.
The book is extremely well-organized and easy to follow. Although many of the examples were based on other industries, I found them relatable to my own experiences. To me, that speaks to the flexibility and adaptability of the tools to multiple industries and organizational structures. I run the PMO for a large medical device company and initiated the creation and implementation of a PPM methodology roughly 2 years ago. I found that many of the lessons we learned along the way were presented as best practices in this book. I highly recommend the implementation of a PPM framework as it has certainly helped us “right-size” our program portfolio as well as the scope of the programs within that portfolio. Developing good PPM practices is invaluable to any organization. Having this book as a guide when we started would have definitely saved us some time and heartache!

Easy to Read Book on Project / Portfolio Management
By James Pencek
Earlier this year I took a Risk Management course taught by Dr. Kodukula. During the class he mentioned many different Project Portfolio Management topics that related to the risk topics he was presenting. So when his book on Organizational Project Portfolio Management came available I picked it up right away. I was hoping for a similar training style to his in class training and was not disappointed. The book is set up into four organized easy to read sections on Project Portfolio Management Basics, Methodology, Tools & Techniques and Case Studies & Exercises. The methodology can be applied to any industry and the case studies are very practical. I was particularly interested in the chapter on Resource Management as I have been dealing with that in my current position in New Product Development. We are always looking for better ways to handle resources and the section provided some great material on the topic as well as useful templates. Overall I give this book 5 Stars and recommend it to anyone in the Project / Portfolio Management Role.
