A lovely strong collection of poems for children.

This small book contains small poems for small people. Each poem is carefully and delicately made, something we often think of when we see something exquisite in nature and compare it to a human - made bauble. These short observations of children and their lives, their sometimes nearly invisible place in the world as they gaze about them to discover what the world is like and how to live in it, are braided through with verbal pictures of children in all seasons and activities. For me they brought strong memories of my own childhood, and moments where it seemed I learned all I needed of life just by being there. A lovely small collection of poems for children.

Delightful collection of poetry for chidren

Poetry is a wonderful thing and I believe there is no better time to be introduced to it then at childhood. The Sky Is Wonder is a very nice collection that is short enough so kids won’t become overwhelmed or bored, and has a strong pull for them to go back and read again. I wish I’d had access to books like this myself when I was younger, but at least I can spread this one around for young ones to get bitten by the poetry bug.

Worst Textbook, Incorrect Information

This was honestly the worst textbook that I have had since coming to college. It's like they didn't bother researching any of the topics they covered. The book was full of inaccuracies and outright wrong/incorrect information. Also, they cite Wikipedia for some of their mini-articles. If it isn't good enough for a 2 page paper in college, it isn't good enough for a nearly $200 textbook.

Wikipedia is not a source

I paid a lot of money for a textbook that contained citations from Wikipedia. Others have also complained about that. It is not a source and no one should pay $100 + for a textbook that would not be considered a valid academic source because of the references contained within. How thoroughly was this book prepared or was it just thrown together so there could be another "new edition" to get more $ out of the those who have to pay for it and use it. There is some contradictory information in this text as well. Granted there was some useful info in there but its validity is in question because of the sources used.

Cases at the end of each chapter are superficial. It is easier to get more updated information from online sources like Wikipedia. Not recommended even for undergraduate students. 20 year-old people handle more information than this book.

Bioinformatics as a discipline arose out of the need to introduce order into the massive data sets produced by the new technologies of molecular biology: large-scale DNA sequencing, measurements of RNA concentrations in multiple gene expression arrays, and new profiling techniques in proteomics. As such, bioinformatics integrates a number of traditional quantitative sciences such as mathematics, statistics, computer science and cybernetics with biological sciences such as genetics, genomics, proteomics and molecular evolution.

In this comprehensive textbook, Polanski and Kimmel present mathematical models in bioinformatics and they describe the biological problems that inspire the computer science tools used to handle the enormous data sets involved. The first part of the book covers the mathematical and computational methods, while the practical applications are presented in the second part. The mathematical presentation is descriptive and avoids unnecessary formalism, and yet remains clear and precise. Emphasis is laid on motivation through biological problems and cross applications. Each of the four chapters in the first part is accompanied by exercises and problems to support an understanding of the techniques presented. Each of the six chapters of the second part is devoted to some specific application domain: sequence alignment, molecular phylogenetics and coalescence theory, genomics, proteomics, RNA, and DNA microarrays. Each chapter concludes with a problems and projects section, to deepen the reader's understanding and to allow for the design of derived methods. Many of the projects involve publicly available software and/or Web-based bioinformatics depositories. Finally, the book closes with a thorough bibliography, reaching from classic research results to very recent findings, providing many pointers for future research.Overall, this volume is ideally suited for a senior undergraduate or graduate course on bioinformatics, with a strong focus on its mathematical and computer science background.

About the Author

Andrzej Polanski is Professor at the Silesian University of Technology. Prior to this, he worked as a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas, Human Genetics Center, Houston USA (1996-1997) ans as a Visiting Professor at Rice University, Houston USA (2001-2003). His research interests are in bioinformatics, biomedical modeling and control, modern control and optimization theory.

Marek Kimmel, Ph.D., is a Professor of Statistics at Rice University in Houston, TX, Professor in Department of Automatic Control, Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Poland, Professor of Biostatistics and Applied Mathematics (adj.) at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and a Professor of Biometry (adj.) at the School of Public Health of the University of Texas in Houston. He is heading the Rice Bioinformatics Group as well as the doctoral program in Statistical Genetics and Bioinformatics. Dr. Kimmel is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. His principal interests are stochastic modeling of human disease (in particular lung cancer progression and screening), statistical and population genetics, biostatistics and bioinformatics.

I hate this one but it's personal opinion

I think it depends on where you are in the bioinformatics field. For me, I need something really practical of what need to be done and not to much of math and matrices and everything else. I figure it would not work for most of us who are not that good with math and computers.

Nonsense

I read this book because I was interested in the bible code phenomenon and wondered what other kinds of numerology was applied to the bible. What I found was far different from the bible code.

The original bible code paper was published in a peer-reviewed journal. Because it had to follow certain academic and mathematical conventions, expert mathematicians were able to dissect the bible code claims and prove they are false. This destroyed the credibility of the bible code. But at least the bible code had the merit of being "falsifiable".

Theomatics, on the other hand, does not present any clear method of finding numerical patterns. It is all very ad hoc and there is no serious attempt at a statistical experiment, at least not in a format that would be accepted by any reputable scientific journal. Therefore, theomatics belongs much more to fringe mathematics and pseudoscience than the bible code, which was simply incorrect mathematics presented in a more rigorous style.

If the author really wants to be taken seriously, he should learn more about how statistical experiments are set up, and then design an experiment using a priori rules which do not allow any wiggle room such as was found in the bible code.

In the meantime, the mathematical judgement on this book is that it is yet another example of pseudoscience in the service of religious faith.

Theomatics.....truth in numbers

If you are straddling the fence in your religion, and are in need of something more than just sheer blind faith, then Theomatics may be just what you have been looking for.
Theomatics scientifically proves that there is more to the Bible than just the literal meanings of the English translated words. This discovery sheds light on many confusing aspects of the Bible, and shows how hugely symbolic both the old and new testaments really are - and how they relate to each other.
Haling from a technical background myself, I have always appreciated and respected the precision of numbers, perhaps much more than the average individual. Numbers truely are the universal language, and are mankinds' "key" to unlocking the physical secrets of this world. Why not see if that "key" also fits the Bible? It does.
Mankind is compelled to control and understand his environment - it is his nature. History is full of individuals that have made incredible scientific discoveries that, at first, were shunned by the masses(much like Theomatics is today) - but later were seen for the great breakthroughs that they were/are.
I have been studying Theomatics for over a year now, and am just as excited about it as ever. I read it just like a technical journal - a few pages at a time, then break away so that I can sort-out what has just been presented.
It's a confusing religious world out there today, with everyone having their own translation of what the Bible is saying - or even if the Bible is for real. This confusion is compounded by all of the "other" Bible code claims, such as ELS, Bible numerics, Omega code, etc. Not to mention the claim of number patterns found in the Koran.
A person today, perhaps more than ever, needs a truth that he/she can believe in. I have studied, and am continuing to study all of these other phenomena as well - but none of them has even come close to what is present in the Theomatic discovery.
